Chapter 7 - The Bell Rings

At 9:30 AM, twenty minutes after leaving the courtroom, we arrived at the New York Stock Exchange in Lower Manhattan.

The main trading floor was packed with hundreds of traders, financial analysts, and network news crews. Banners bearing the sleek black-and-gold logo of Vanguard Health Data Solutions hung high from the historic balconies.

The press had already received breaking news of the courtroom victory in Connecticut. When Evelyn walked onto the floor, surrounded by her executive board and her four sons—Julian, Leo, Asher, and Mason, all looking dashing in tiny tailored navy suits—the entire trading floor erupted into applause.

Colton walked half a step behind us, content to stay in the background, playing the role of proud father and steadfast ally.

We gathered on the balcony overlooking the trading floor. The giant digital clock on the wall counted down the seconds to the opening bell: 09:29:50... 09:29:55...

My four boys gathered around the podium, their little hands resting on top of mine over the heavy brass button that would ring the bell.

"Are you ready, boys?" I asked softly, looking down at their excited faces.

"We're gonna make the bell go ding-dong!" Mason giggled happily.

I looked back at Colton, who was watching us with tears in his eyes, holding his breath. I reached out with my free hand and grabbed his forearm, pulling him forward to stand beside me.

"You belong up here too, Colton," I said quietly. "They're your sons."

Colton let out a ragged breath, stepping up and placing his large hand over mine and the boys' hands.

09:30:00.

Together, six pairs of hands pressed the button.

The famous NYSE brass bell blared across the floor. Confidential trading terminals lit up green. Confetti rained down from the ceiling in a shimmering cascade of gold and silver.

On the giant electronic wall monitors, Vanguard’s stock ticker—$VNHD—appeared.

OPENING PRICE: $45.00 10:00 AM PRICE: $68.50 (+52%) MARKET CAPITALIZATION: $18.6 BILLION

Vanguard's IPO was officially the largest healthcare technology flotation of the decade.

Below on the floor, traders cheered and tossed papers into the air. Corporate reporters scrambled to broadcast live updates. Evelyn Hayes wasn't just a survivor of a corporate scandal—she was officially one of the most powerful self-made executives in modern finance.

As the noise of the floor roared below, Colton leaned in close to my ear, his breath warm against my neck.

"You did it, Evelyn," he whispered, his voice thick with admiration. "You turned his weapon into an empire."

I turned to face him, looking into those gray eyes that had once broken my heart, but now offered nothing but unconditional devotion.

"I didn't do it alone today," I acknowledged softly, a gentle smile touching my lips. "Thank you for standing up in that courtroom, Colton."

"I’ll stand up for you for the rest of my life," Colton replied, his voice deadly serious, yet filled with tenderness. "I don't expect you to forgive me overnight for the years we lost. But I will spend every day proving to you that I am worthy of being your partner."

Julian tugged on Colton’s pant leg, pointing up at the falling confetti. "Daddy! Look! It's raining gold!"

Colton scooped Julian up into his arms with effortless strength, laughing freely—a sound so bright and unburdened that it swept away the last lingering remnants of the darkness we had lived through. He pulled Leo up onto his other hip, while Asher and Mason clung happily to his legs.

Standing under the falling confetti, surrounded by the roaring success of the company I had built from nothing, I finally allowed my heart to heal.
