Chapter 2 - The Aftermath at Hayes Tower

The sun rose over Manhattan in shades of bruised purple and cold gold. By 7:00 AM, the front page of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and Bloomberg all featured the exact same image: me, in a simple black dress, walking out of The Plaza flanked by four identical five-year-old boys, while Colton Hayes stood shattered in the background.

"THE $120 MILLION REVENUE: EVELYN HAYES RETURNS TO CRUSH HAYES GLOBAL." "QUADRUPLET HEIRS SURROUND PLAZA WEDDING: WHITMORE MERGER COLLAPSES."

Inside the executive boardroom on the 80th floor of Hayes Tower, the air was thick with panic.

Walter Hayes sat at the head of the long marble table, looking ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. Across from him sat six senior board members, three crisis PR specialists, and Richard Whitmore, who was currently pacing the floor like a caged predator.

"The Whitmore Group is pulling out," Richard snarled, slamming his fist onto the table. "Sloane is in tears, our stock dropped eight percent in pre-market trading, and the press is calling my family a laughingstock! You lied to us, Walter! You told us Colton’s past was clean!"

"It was clean!" Walter barked, his voice hoarse. "She was a nobody! A low-level accountant from upstate! I gave her enough money to live like a queen for three lifetimes! How was I supposed to know she would build a healthcare data monopoly?!"

"Because you underestimated her," a cold voice said from the doorway.

Colton walked into the room. He was still wearing the trousers from his tuxedo, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hair disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot from a night spent without sleep. In his hand, he carried a thick yellow folder.

"Colton," Walter sighed, standing up. "Thank God. Sit down. We need to formulate a strategy to contest the debt board’s leverage. We can claim coercion, or file an emergency injunction against Vanguard’s IPO—"

"Shut up, father," Colton said.

The room fell dead silent. Walter froze. Colton had spent his entire life obeying Walter—learning his business methods, accepting his arranged matches, walking in his shadow. He had never spoken to his father in that tone.

Colton walked to the head of the table and dumped the contents of the yellow folder across the marble surface.

Dozens of papers slid across the table. Financial statements, offshore wire transfers, private investigator reports, and surveillance logs dating back five years.

"I spent the night in the company archives," Colton said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I pulled the logs from the security firm you hired five years ago. You didn't just give Evelyn a check, did you? You threatened her."

Walter’s jaw tightened. "I did what was necessary for the survival of this family!"

"You told her that if she didn't sign the non-disclosure agreement and take the money, you would use your influence to strip her of her professional licenses, blackball her from every financial firm in North America, and file suit to take any child she bore away from her on grounds of financial instability." Colton stepped closer to his father, his gray eyes burning with a dark, dangerous fire. "You knew she was carrying my children, and you threatened to steal them from her womb."

"She was a distraction!" Walter yelled, dropping all pretense. "You were twenty-six! You were supposed to take over this company! You were supposed to marry into a dynasty, not tie yourself to a girl whose father died in debt! She would have ruined you!"

"She built a fourteen-billion-dollar company from scratch in five years!" Colton roared back, slamming his palms onto the table. "She didn't ruin me! You ruined me! You made me live five years thinking the love of my life threw away our relationship for cash! You let me grieve! You let me rot!"

Before Walter could answer, the glass doors of the boardroom slid open with a soft hiss.

I walked in.

I was wearing a tailored charcoal-gray suit, my hair pinned back in a flawless twist, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. Behind me walked my chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance—the most terrifying corporate litigator in North America.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, taking a seat at the far end of the table without waiting for an invitation. "I see you've already started the party without me."

Colton turned to look at me, his expression shifting instantly from rage to desperate tenderness. "Evelyn..."

"Sit down, Colton," I said, keeping my tone strictly professional. "We have twenty minutes before the market opens, and I prefer to conduct business efficiently."

Walter straightened his tie, trying desperately to regain his composure. "Evelyn. You think you've won because you made a grand entrance at a party? This is corporate governance. You cannot use leverage gained through bad-faith acquisitions to dictate terms to Hayes Global."

Marcus Vance chuckled softly, opening his folder. "Mr. Hayes, with all due respect, your company’s secondary credit facility was underwritten by Sovereign Alpha Funds. Three months ago, Vanguard Health Data acquired ninety-two percent of Sovereign Alpha's non-performing debt assets. My client doesn't just hold your leverage. She owns your oxygen."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table and clasping my hands.

"Here are my terms," I said calmly.

"First: Walter Hayes will step down as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hayes Global, effective immediately."

Walter’s face turned white. "You can't be serious!"

"Second," I continued, ignoring him entirely. "All voting rights attached to the Hayes family trust will be frozen until a court-appointed custodian verifies that no corporate assets were misused to pay off private debts—including, but not limited to, the one hundred and twenty million dollar check written to me five years ago from an offshore subsidiary."

"That was a legal settlement!" Walter spat.

"That was embezzlement from a publicly traded firm to cover up an illegal coercion scheme," Marcus corrected cheerfully.

"Third," I said, looking directly at Colton. "Colton Hayes will assume the role of Interim CEO. But he will operate under the oversight of a board panel appointed by Vanguard."

Colton stared at me, his chest heaving. "Evelyn... I don't care about the company. Take it. Take every share. Just... let me see my sons."

The pain in his voice was real. I could feel it radiating across the table, pulling at old memories I had spent five years trying to burn out of my heart. I remembered the boy who used to bring me coffee at 2:00 AM when we were just low-level analysts. I remembered the man who had cried when he proposed to me in a tiny apartment.

But I also remembered the five years I spent alone, throwing up from morning sickness with four babies in my belly, praying my rent wouldn't bounce while I coded software until my fingers bled.

"The boys do not know you, Colton," I said quietly. "And I will not expose them to the toxic filth of this family until I am certain they are safe."

"They are my blood!" Walter screamed, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at me. "You cannot keep the Hayes heirs away from this family! I will file for immediate custody! I will spend every penny I have left to drag you through every family court in the State of New York!"

I stood up slowly. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.

"Try it, Walter," I whispered, the cold fury in my voice silencing the entire room. "File the motion. Let’s go to court. Let’s put your financial records, your private security contracts, and your medical history on public record. Let’s see what the press does when they find out how Hayes Global treats its mothers."

Walter opened his mouth to reply, but no sound came out. He slowly collapsed back into his chair, breathing heavily, clutching his chest.

"You have until 5:00 PM to execute the resignation documents, Walter," I said, picking up my briefcase. "Colton... if you want to talk about the boys, you can meet me at my office at three. Alone."

I turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the legacy of Hayes Global burning behind me.
