Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Greenwich

By Thursday morning, the corporate war had escalated into full-blown mayhem.

My counter-suit against Whitmore Logistics hit the federal court docket at 8:00 AM. By noon, trading of Whitmore Group shares was halted after financial regulators launched a surprise audit into their European subsidiaries. Richard Whitmore was caught by reporters sneaking out the back entrance of his Connecticut estate, refusing to comment.

However, cornered predators are the most dangerous.

I was at my private residence—a heavily secured estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, surrounded by ten acres of private woodland—preparing the boys for dinner. Colton had stayed late every evening, earning every inch of his way back into our sons' lives. He learned their favorite bedtime stories, remembered who preferred apple juice over orange, and proved himself to be a remarkably patient father.

At 7:30 PM, my chief security guard, Lev, walked into the kitchen, his expression dark.

"Ma'am, we have a problem at the main gate," Lev said in his low Russian accent.

"Press?" I asked, setting down a tray of fruit.

"No. Walter Hayes."

Colton, who was sitting at the island counter helping Asher draw a picture of a dinosaur, froze. "My father is here?"

"He came in a single town car," Lev reported. "He demands to see you and the children. He claims he has court paperwork."

Colton stood up, his face hardening instantly. "Stay here with the boys, Evelyn. I'll handle him."

"No," I said, putting a hand on Colton’s arm. "This is my house. He doesn't set foot on this property without my permission."

We walked down the long, gravel driveway together, flanked by Lev and two armed guards. The iron gate stood between us and a sleek black sedan parked on the quiet country road.

Walter Hayes stepped out of the back seat.

He didn't look like the polished corporate titan who had commanded the Plaza ballroom forty-eight hours ago. His hair was disheveled, his expensive Italian suit was rumpled, and his eyes had a desperate, unhinged wildness.

"Colton!" Walter called out through the iron bars of the gate. "Thank God you're here! You need to leave this woman right now! She’s destroyed everything! The board voted to freeze my pension! The SEC has subpoenaed my personal accounts!"

Colton walked right up to the gate, his hands jammed into his pockets, staring at his father with cold detachment. "You did that to yourself, Walter. You committed financial fraud and lied to your shareholders for five years."

"I did it for you!" Walter yelled, grabbing the iron bars. "I built Hayes Global for you! And you're throwing it all away for a woman who extorted us! Look at what she's done to our legacy!"

"Your legacy is poison," Colton said smoothly. "And I'm done drinking it."

Walter’s eyes shifted frantically behind Colton, locking onto me. A cruel, bitter smile twisted his lips.

"You think you've won, don't you, Evelyn?" Walter hissed. "You think you can take my company and my grandchildren and live happily ever after?"

"I don't think, Walter. I know," I said calmly. "You have no power here. You have no legal standing, no corporate authority, and no family left. You are an empty suit."

"Is that so?" Walter reached into his jacket pocket. Lev’s hand moved instantly to his sidearm, but Walter pulled out a thick white envelope and thrust it through the bars of the gate. "This is an emergency petition filed in the District Court of Connecticut. An ex-parte motion for emergency grand-parental visitation and an injunction prohibiting you from taking those children out of the country prior to Vanguard's IPO."

I frowned. "On what grounds?"

"On the grounds that you are an unfit mother who accepted a massive cash bribe to conceal the existence of four heirs to a major public estate!" Walter laughed—a high, manic sound. "The court has scheduled an emergency hearing for tomorrow morning at nine. If you fail to appear, a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest, and child protective services will take temporary custody of those boys!"

Colton's face went pale with absolute fury. He grabbed the iron bars, leaning in until his face was inches from his father's.

"If you bring child protective services anywhere near my sons, Walter," Colton whispered, his voice trembling with a violence I had never heard from him before, "I will personally burn every asset you have left to ash. I will make sure you die in a federal prison cell."

"It's already filed, Colton!" Walter cackled, stepping back toward his car. "See you in court tomorrow morning, Evelyn! Let’s see how your IPO pricing looks when the headlines report that your children are in state custody!"

The town car sped away, leaving dust floating in the cool evening air.

I stood by the gate, clutching the legal envelope. My fingers were shaking slightly—not out of fear for myself, but out of the primal, ferocious instinct every mother feels when a predator threatens her young.

Colton turned to me, his hands gently wrapping around mine, taking the envelope from my fingers.

"Evelyn," Colton said softly, looking deep into my eyes. "Look at me."

I looked up.

"He isn't taking them," Colton vowed, his gray eyes fierce with unyielding love. "I lost five years with my sons because I was too weak to stand up to that man. I will die before I let him touch them again. Do you hear me?"

May you like

For the first time in five years, I didn't see the rich heir who had let his father control his world. I saw a man who had finally broken his chains—a man ready to tear down an empire to protect the woman and children he loved.

"I hear you, Colton," I whispered. "Then let's go to court."
