Chapter 10 - The Sweetest Taste

Two years later. June 15th.
The sun was setting gently over the Berkshire Mountains, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of rose, gold, and violet.
The sprawling lawns of The Vance Estate were set up for an intimate, outdoor dinner party. A long mahogany table stood beneath a canopy of blooming white wisteria, covered in glowing candles, fresh crystal glasses, and delicious organic food.
Sitting around the table were the real people who mattered—Uncle Arthur, close friends from the foundation, loyal staff who had become like family, and Meredith, Edmund, and Rosie.
Rosie, now seven years old, was sitting at the head of the kids' table nearby, blowing out seven bright candles on a magnificent, homemade vanilla cake topped with fresh strawberries.
"Happy Birthday, Rosie!" everyone cheered, clapping their hands as the little girl blew out every single candle in one big breath.
Meredith sat beside Edmund at the main table, her hand resting warmly inside his beneath the soft linen tablecloth. She looked radiant, deeply happy, her soul completely settled in absolute peace.
Edmund leaned close to her ear, his deep voice carrying a quiet, affectionate warmth. "Seven years old today. She’s growing up so fast."
"She’s happy, Edmund," Meredith murmured, laying her head softly against his shoulder. "That's all that ever mattered."
Suddenly, Rosie ran over from the kids' table, holding a small plate with a slice of birthday cake on it.
"Mommy! Look!" Rosie laughed, setting the plate down on the table in front of Meredith. "I saved the biggest piece for you!"
Meredith looked down at the cake. It was covered in soft, sweet white frosting, topped with a single ripe strawberry.
Edmund picked up a small silver fork, dipped it gently into the corner of the slice, taking a tiny bit of the white frosting, and offered it to Meredith.
Meredith looked at the frosting, then looked up into Edmund’s loving eyes, and then over at her daughter’s laughing face.
She leaned forward and tasted it.
"Well, my love?" Edmund asked gently, his thumb gently brushing her cheek. "How does it taste?"
Meredith closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the warm summer breeze rustle through the wisteria, listening to the pure, joyous laughter of her daughter ringing across the garden.
She opened her eyes, looking at her husband and her child, her heart completely full, whole, and forever victorious.

"It's sweet, baby," Meredith whispered, smiling bright and true under the golden twilight sky. "It's the sweetest thing in the world."
