Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

At 6:00 a.m. the following morning, Edmund Cross sat in the high-floor corner office of Cross Financial Tower in Manhattan.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the sunrise over the East River, casting golden light across the minimalist marble and steel decor. On his grand mahogany desk lay a single black leather binder, stamped with a gold seal.

Beside him stood Arthur Vance, the sixty-eight-year-old managing director of Vance Legal Holdings and Meredith’s maternal uncle.

Edmund turned the final page of the dossier, his dark eyes fixed on the financial documentation provided by Arthur’s team.

"She lived like that for five years?" Edmund asked, his voice low, deep, and dangerous.

"She wanted obscurity, Edmund," Arthur explained, sipping his black coffee. "When her parents passed away in the aviation accident six years ago, Meredith was overwhelmed by the vulture-like behavior of our distant relatives. She wanted to prove to herself that she could live a simple, honest life without the weight of the family name. So she took a modest trust allowance, worked a real job, and met Bradley Norton."

Edmund closed the binder with a sharp, heavy thud. "And Norton spent five years bleeding her dry without even knowing it."

"Precisely," Arthur replied coldness in his tone. "Bradley Norton believes he is an elite real estate developer. In reality, he is a mediocre salesman whose entire business empire was constructed on silent, anonymous subsidies provided by Meredith’s protective trust. Apex Investment Group? Owned by us. The lease on his 5th Avenue office? Owned by us. The primary lender holding his corporate debt? A subsidiary of Cross Financial."

Edmund stood up, walking slowly to the window, his hands clasped behind his back.

He recalled the image of Meredith standing in that tacky suburban backyard, pink frosting smeared across her face, kneeling down to feed her daughter with a calm, unbreakable dignity that had pierced straight through his heart. He had spent his life surrounded by greedy socialites, plastic heiresses, and ruthless corporate mercenaries. He had never seen a woman like Meredith Vance.

"Where is she now?" Edmund asked.

"She arrived at the penthouse on 72nd Street at two this morning," Arthur said. "She requested three things: a quiet bath for Rosie, a legal team to handle her divorce, and a complete financial severing of all ties with the Norton family."

Edmund turned back to Arthur, a cold, lethal smile touching his lips. "Tell her legal team to step down."

Arthur blinked, surprised. "I beg your pardon, Edmund?"

"A standard divorce lawyer will negotiate alimony and child support," Edmund said softly, leaning his hands against the mahogany desk. "Bradley Norton doesn't deserve a standard divorce. He humiliated a woman who protected him. He humiliated your niece. And he did it in front of forty-seven people."

Edmund picked up his secure telephone and tapped a single speed-dial button.

"Julian," Edmund commanded into the receiver. "Initiate Project Terminus. I want every loan, every lease, every lines of credit, and every corporate permit associated with Bradley Norton and Norton Real Estate Holdings called in by 9:00 a.m. today."

"Understood, Mr. Cross," the voice on the phone replied instantly. "And the mistress?"

"Tanya Davis," Edmund said coldly. "Contact her primary modeling agency and the luxury brand she just signed an endorsement with. Cancel the contracts. Inform them she is named as a co-respondent in a high-profile corporate fraud and matrimonial lawsuit."

Edmund hung up the phone and looked back at Arthur Vance.

"I am hosting a private charity gala at the Metropolitan Club on Friday evening," Edmund said calmly. "Ensure Meredith has a dress worthy of her true name. It's time for Bradley Norton to finally meet the woman he married."
