Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Triumph

The central family court of Boston was a grand, stone structure filled with the city’s elite lawyers and media reporters. The Kensington family—an old-money, arrogant couple dressed in expensive furs and tailored suits—sat on the left side of the aisle, their lead attorney looking smugly over his spectacles.
"Your Honor," the Kensington attorney argued, standing before the judge’s bench. "Gideon Sterling is a man surrounded by violence. His estate was recently targeted by a cartel, his daughter’s life was put in extreme jeopardy, and he employs an unqualified, low-class waitress as the child's primary caregiver. We request an immediate emergency transfer of custody to my clients."
The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
The conversation died instantly as Gideon Sterling strode down the center aisle. He wore a pristine black suit, his presence commanding the room. But it was the woman walking beside him that captured every camera lens.
Joan wore an elegant, sophisticated cream Chanel suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a flawless twist. On her left ring finger, the five-carat oval diamond caught the light, perfectly matched by a simple, elegant gold wedding band. She carried a leather portfolio containing certified documentation from the city registrar.
Gideon and Joan took their seats at the defense table, Betty sitting between them, holding both of their hands.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, looking over her glasses. "Do you have a response to these serious allegations regarding your domestic stability?"
Gideon stood up, his voice rich, confident, and completely calm. "Your Honor, the security threats against my family have been completely neutralized by federal authorities. As for the allegation regarding my daughter's caregiver..."
He reached down, taking Joan’s hand and helping her stand beside him. He turned to look at the Kensington family, his eyes gleaming with a cold, triumphant satisfaction. "This is no longer Miss Joan Rhodess, the waitress. This is my wife, Joan Sterling. We were legally married yesterday evening. She is Betty’s official, adoptive mother. Our home is fully secure, our family is unified, and I believe my wife has some character references she would like to submit to the court."
Joan stepped forward, handing a thumb drive to the bailiff. The projection screen on the wall lit up, displaying letters of recommendation from the governor, the chief of the federal task force, and most importantly—a video recording from Betty’s child psychologist, stating that Joan’s presence was the single most vital factor in the child's complete recovery from trauma.

The judge reviewed the files for less than three minutes before slamming her gavel down with a loud crack.
"The petition for custody transfer is denied with prejudice," the judge declared. "Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, congratulations on your marriage. This court finds that Betty Sterling is exactly where she belongs."
