Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

Three weeks passed inside the gilded fortress of Blackwood Sanctuary. Joan’s physical wounds began to heal, the dark purple bruises on her ribs fading into a soft yellow, and her left eye finally opening completely to reveal a deep, clear amber color that Gideon found himself tracking whenever she entered a room.

Her routine had shifted drastically. She was no longer running through the lunch rush, scrubbing coffee stains from laminate tables, or hiding from her landlord. Instead, her mornings were spent in the estate's massive glass conservatory, helping Betty replant a row of damaged white and red rosebushes.

Joan wore a soft cream sweater and jeans—clothes provided by Gideon’s personal shoppers—but she still moved with that quiet, invisible grace she had developed over years of survival.

"Look, Joan! A ladybug!" Betty laughed, her small fingers pointing to a bright red speck on a green leaf. The little girl looked vibrant now, the haunted look in her eyes slowly receding, replaced by the natural joy of a seven-year-old who felt safe.

"Make a wish, Betty," Joan smiled, her voice soft and warm.

"I already did," Betty said, looking up with a fierce sincerity. "I wished that you would stay here forever and be my new mommy."

Joan’s hand froze over the watering can. Her heart did a strange, violent flip in her chest. Before she could process the child's words, a deep shadow fell over the flowerbed.

Gideon stood at the entrance of the conservatory. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing thick, powerful forearms crossed over his chest. He had been watching them for God knew how long, his intense blue eyes fixed on Joan’s face.

"Betty," Gideon said gently. "Marcus is waiting for you in the kitchen. He made those chocolate chip cookies you like."

"Yay!" Betty cheered, kissing Joan’s cheek before sprinting out of the conservatory, her laughter echoing off the glass walls.

Once the child was gone, the silence between Joan and Gideon became electric, vibrating with an unspoken tension that had been building with every shared glance over the dinner table. Gideon walked slowly down the gravel path, his eyes never leaving hers.

"She means it, you know," Gideon said quietly, stopping just inches from her. The scent of him—spicy cologne and raw power—enveloped her, making her breath hitch.

"She’s a child, Mr. Sterling," Joan said, stepping back until her spine pressed against the warm brick wall of the greenhouse. "She’s traumatized, and she’s projecting her memories of her mother onto the person who happened to be there when she was scared."

"And what about me, Joan?" Gideon asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble as he stepped closer, effectively trapping her between his massive frame and the wall. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently catching a stray strand of hair that had fallen across her cheek, tucking it behind her ear. His touch was incredibly warm, sending a jolt of pure electricity straight down her spine. "Do you think I am projecting when I spend my nights staring at the security feeds of this room, ensuring you are breathing comfortably?"

Joan stared into his ice-blue eyes, seeing the raw, predatory intensity hidden beneath the mask of a billionaire executive. "You're a dangerous man, Gideon. I’ve seen the way your guards look at you. I know what people whisper about the Sterling name."

"I am exactly what this city needs me to be to keep my daughter alive," Gideon whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes. "But when I am with you, the noise stops. The blood on my hands doesn't feel quite as cold."

He leaned in, his lips hovering just millimeters from hers, giving her ample time to push him away. But Joan didn't move. She couldn't. She clutched the fabric of his black shirt, pulling him down to close the distance.

The kiss was fierce, possessive, and filled with a desperate hunger that shattered the last remnants of their professional distance. Gideon wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly as he claimed her with an iron-willed intensity that told her she was no longer just a guest in his house—she was his.
