Chapter 5 - The Corporate Gala

It was the fifth week, and the shadow war between Gideon Sterling and the Vance Cartel had spilled from the docks into the highest echelons of the city’s financial district. Aldis Pike had gone into hiding after Gideon’s men systematically slaughtered his entire extraction team at the docks, but the corporate backers of the cartel—the corrupt billionaires who funded the politicians—were hosting the annual Autumn Financial Gala at the Metropolitan Hotel.
"We are going," Gideon announced during breakfast. He wore a flawless tuxedo, his silver-tipped hair perfectly styled.
Joan looked up from her tea, wearing a simple silk robe. "Gideon, they know my face. If I step into that hotel—"
"You will step into that hotel wearing a diamond necklace that costs more than the restaurant you worked at, Joan," Gideon said, walking over and kneeling beside her chair. He took her hand, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her wrist. "The Vance Cartel survives because the elite of this city think I am just a criminal they can isolate. Tonight, I am introducing you to Boston as my future wife. Once they see the ring on your finger, they will realize that an attack on you is a declaration of total war against the Sterling Empire."
Two hours later, Joan stood before the mirror in the master suite.
The transformation was absolute. The invisible waitress was gone. In her place stood a woman of devastating elegance. She wore a midnight-blue velvet gown that clung to her curves, the low back exposing the faint, fading scar on her shoulder blade. Around her neck was a collar of flawless white diamonds, and on her left ring finger sat a massive, five-carat oval-cut diamond that caught the light with a blinding glare.
When they entered the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Hotel, the effect was instantaneous. The deafening roar of conversation dropped into a tense, suffocating silence as Gideon Sterling strode down the marble steps, his arm firmly locked with Joan's.
Whispers rippled through the crowd like a wave of static.
"Is that the girl from the restaurant?" "The waitress?" "He’s marrying her?"
Standing near the champagne fountain was Victor Vance, the billionaire CEO of Vanguard Logistics and the secret head of the Vance Cartel. Beside him stood three city council members and the chief justice. Victor’s face went completely pale, his glass of champagne trembling as Gideon walked straight toward him, pulling Joan close against his side.
"Victor," Gideon said, his voice smooth as silk but carrying the weight of a guillotine. "I believe you haven't met my fiancée, Joan Rhodess. She used to work at the Silver Oak. I believe some of your employees tried to tip her with steel batons and gunfire."
Victor swallowed hard, trying to maintain his corporate smile. "Mr. Sterling... I'm sure I don't know what you're implying. The incident at the restaurant was a tragedy, a random act of street violence—"
May you like
"The next random act of violence will occur inside your boardroom, Victor," Gideon interrupted, his ice-blue eyes locking onto the older man with a lethal finality. "Every stock you own, every politician you bought, every warehouse you use—I bought them all out three hours ago. You are broke, Victor. And by tomorrow morning, you will be answering to the federal authorities for treason and domestic terrorism."
Joan looked at Victor Vance, seeing the absolute terror in his eyes, and realized that the man standing beside her wasn't just a mafia boss—he was the king of the city, and she was standing right beside his throne.
