Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Restored

The afternoon sun of July 2026 hung like a warm, golden shield over the sprawling lawns of the Malba estate. The air was thick with the beautiful, rich aroma of a traditional Dominican feast—fresh roasted pork, yellow rice with pigeon peas, and large platters of sweet plantains prepared by Ramona and the office staff.

Over sixty people filled the beautiful garden—warehouse workers, delivery drivers, corporate attorneys, and the medical staff who had helped rebuild the family from the ashes of betrayal. This wasn't a corporate marketing gala; it was the annual Fiesta de la Restauración—a celebration of the company’s highest-performing quarterly revenue in twenty years, and a tribute to the women who held the foundation together.

At the head of the long, wooden outdoor table sat Mrs. Mercedes. She looked radiant, her chair adjusted to face her people. While her body remained mostly still, her digital screen was constantly active, flashing messages of gratitude and humor that kept the entire table laughing and cheering.

Lucia stood at the edge of the stone terrace, looking down at the beautiful scene. She held a glass of white wine, her face glowing with a deep, unshakeable peace that no storm could ever take away.

Licenciado Alejandro Vargas walked up beside her, his glass raised in a silent toast. "The final transition audit was validated by the state revenue board this morning, Doña Lucia. Mercedes Auto Logistics is officially cleared of all historical liability. The new distribution centers in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are fully operational."

"Thank you, Alejandro," Lucia smiled, clinking her glass against his. "For believing in me when I was just a tired nurse cleaning a bedroom in Queens."

"I didn't just believe in you, Lucia," the old lawyer said softly, looking over at Mrs. Mercedes, who was currently raising a small cup of water with her left hand to toast her workers. "Mercedes believed in you. And a woman who built an empire from a single grease shop never makes a mistake with her inventory."

Down on the grass, Ramona raised her glass high, her voice booming over the music. "A toast! To the true queens of the Castillo lineage! To Doña Mercedes and Doña Lucia! May their house always be strong, and may their doors always be closed to the wolves!"

The entire crowd erupted into a loud, joyous cheer, their cups flashing under the bright New York sun.

Lucia walked down the stone steps, joining her mother-in-law at the head of the table. She leaned down, her arm wrapping around the older woman’s shoulders as they looked out over the endless, beautiful horizon of their legacy. The stretcher was gone, the medicine smell had turned into jasmine, and the house they had built together was finally, eternally, safe from the storm.
