Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Paper King

The hallway of the Queens apartment building looked like a stage for a public execution. Neighbors began peering out from their doorways, whispering and pointing as the private security team began placing yellow inventory tags across the luxury furniture Javier had bought with his mother's money.

"This is my house!" Javier screamed, his voice echoing down the corridor as he tried to push past the lead marshal. "My mother owns this apartment! I am her only son! You can't throw me out on the street because of some paperwork trick by my ex-wife!"

"Your mother does own this apartment, Mr. Mercedes," Licenciado Vargas said, stepping forward, his gray hair catching the bright hallway lights. He looked completely unbothered by Javier’s explosive rage. "And as the sole owner, her primary trustee has chosen to terminate your occupancy lease effective immediately due to gross destruction of property and unauthorized cohabitation."

Brenda emerged from the bedroom, her face pale, frantically wrapping her coat over her silk robe. She was clutching her designer suitcase, her long acrylic nails digging into the leather handle. "Javi! Do something! Tell them who you are! They’re taking my jewelry boxes from the vanity!"

"Those jewelry boxes were purchased utilizing corporate funds allocated for Mrs. Mercedes’s medical therapy, Ms. Gomez," Vargas said, his voice turning into a freezing, clinical delivery. "They are currently considered stolen corporate property under New York state financial law. If you attempt to leave this building with them, the marshals will detain you for grand larceny."

Brenda let out a sharp, horrified shriek, instantly dropping her hands from the suitcase as if it were on fire. She looked at Javier, and for the first time, she didn't see a wealthy, powerful business mogul; she saw a pathetic, trembling child who didn't even have a dollar left to his name.

"You lied to me!" Brenda yelled at Javier, her voice dripping with venom. "You told me you owned the whole chain! You told me your mom was a vegetable and that everything was yours! I left my old apartment for you, and now you’re getting thrown out like a dog!"

"Brenda, baby, please... I’ll fix this," Javier begged, reaching out for her arm, but she slapped his hand away violently.

"Don't touch me, you loser!" she snapped. She grabbed her phone, shoved past the marshals, and ran down the stairs in her high heels, leaving Javier standing alone in his designer suit in the middle of the hallway.

The marshals handed Javier a single, transparent plastic bag containing his personal wallet, his identification cards, and his car keys.

"Your Escalade has been repossessed by the corporate fleet line, sir," the marshal noted coldly. "The keys are only for your personal storage locker in the basement. Your forty-five minutes are up. Please move toward the exit."

Javier walked down the stairs of his building, his legs feeling like lead. When he stepped out onto the sidewalk, the cold morning air hit his face like a physical blow. He pulled out his wallet and opened it. He had exactly forty-three dollars in cash. Every single credit card—his personal accounts, his corporate tokens, his overdraft lines—was a useless piece of plastic.

He sat down on the stone steps of the building, his head in his hands, his arrogant pomade-slicked hair completely ruined by the drizzling rain. He had thought that by throwing his mother out on a stretcher, he was freeing himself from a burden. He had thought that money decided who mattered.

But as the sun finally broke through the clouds over Queens, Javier realized that without the woman on that stretcher, he was absolutely nothing.
