Chapter 8 - WHISPERS OF THE PAST

While life was returning to peace, the ghosts of the past made one final, desperate attempt to tear the family apart.

An corrupt appellate judge, bribed by remaining factions of Veronica’s legal network, issued a sudden motion to freeze the assets of the Camila Elizondo Foundation, claiming irregularities in the transfer of funds to the new community clinics. At the same time, tabloid journalists began circulating malicious rumors that Hector had been manipulated by a gold-digging servant who had staged the entire conspiracy to seize his fortune.

One evening, Hector returned home to find Mariana sitting in the study, staring at a smear article in a prominent magazine. The headline read: THE MAID WHO CONNED LOMAS DE CHAPULTEPEC.

"Don't read that trash," Hector said firmly, walking over and snatching the magazine away, throwing it into the fireplace where it burst into flames.

"It's not the words that hurt, Hector," Mariana said softly, looking up with troubled eyes. "It's the fact that as long as I am here, people will use my background to attack you, your reputation, and the foundation. Maybe... maybe I should step back from the public eye."

Hector pulled a chair up right in front of her, taking both her hands in his with intense focus.

"Listen to me very carefully, Mariana," Hector said, his voice dropping into a fierce, passionate tone. "I spent thirty-eight years living in high society. I know these people. They tear down anything that is pure because their own lives are built on lies and posturing. You have more honor in your pinky finger than the entire board of that club combined."

"Hector..."

"No," he interrupted gently. "I am done letting society dictate how I live my life. They think you are a gold-digger? Then let us give them something real to talk about."

Hector reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He dropped to one knee right there on the rug in front of her.

Mariana’s hands covered her mouth as tears immediately sprang to her eyes.

Hector opened the box, revealing a breathtaking ring—not a ostentatious diamond, but a delicate, vintage gold band set with a radiant sapphire, the color of the midnight sky.

"Mariana, you saved my life, you loved my children as your own, and you taught me how to be a real man and a real father," Hector said, his eyes shining with profound love. "I don't care about headlines. I don't care about high society. All I care about is spending the rest of my life making you as happy as you have made us. Will you marry me?"

Mariana looked down at the man who had abandoned his pride, his status, and his fears to love her completely. The doubts that had plagued her mind evaporated instantly.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with emotion. "Yes, Hector! A thousand times, yes!"

He slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply as the fire crackled in the hearth, burning away the last remnants of the past's darkness.
