Chapter 4 - THE BALLROOM OF VIPERS

The grand ballroom of the Club de Regatas in Polanco was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, silk gowns, and tailored tuxedos. High-society elites, politicians, and medical tycoons mingled over glasses of vintage champagne, entirely unaware of the storm brewing beneath the surface.
Dr. Veronica Ibarra stood near the center stage, wearing an emerald green silk dress that accentuated her calculated elegance. She smiled charmingly at a group of foundation board members, accepting their condolences for the 'tragic decline' of her late friend’s husband.
"It is simply heartbreaking," Veronica said, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy, dabbing her eye with a lace handkerchief. "Poor Hector has completely lost his mind to grief. He’s hired unvetted domestic staff, locked himself in that mansion, and is refusing proper psychiatric treatment for those poor, fragile babies. Tomorrow, with the board's support, we will finally step in and give those boys the professional care they desperately need."
"You are a saint, Veronica," an elderly board member remarked. "Camila would be so grateful to know you are looking after her family."
Before Veronica could respond, a sudden hush fell over the entrance of the ballroom. The heavy oak doors swung open, and the crowd parted like the Red Sea.
Hector Elizondo walked into the hall. He was dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, his hair neatly styled, his posture radiating immense power and absolute sanity. Gone was the broken, sleep-deprived ghost of the past five months. In his eyes burned a fiery, dangerous intelligence.
Beside him, walking with quiet elegance and unshakable confidence, was Mariana. She wore a simple yet stunning midnight-blue evening gown provided by Hector’s team, her dark hair pinned up in an elegant chignon. Though she carried no expensive jewelry, her dignified presence and serene aura drew every eye in the room.
Veronica’s face went ghastly white. Her glass of champagne trembled violently in her hand.
"Hector?" the board chairman gasped, stepping forward. "We... we were told you were unwell!"
"Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, Don Fernando," Hector said, his voice echoing clearly across the hushed room. "In fact, I have never been clearer of mind."
Veronica quickly recovered, her eyes narrowing into slits as she stepped forward to intercept them. "Hector, what is the meaning of this spectacle? And why have you brought your maid to a private foundation event? This is completely inappropriate!"
"She is not here as my employee, Veronica," Hector said, his tone striking like a whip. "She is here as the woman who saved my children's lives... and as the key witness to the crime you committed against my wife."
Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Guests leaned in, murmuring frantically.
"He's insane!" Veronica shrieked, appealing to the board members. "You see?! He’s experiencing psychotic paranoia! Officers, security, remove him!"
"Nobody moves," Julian Alvarez’s voice boomed from the entrance. He walked into the ballroom accompanied by two high-ranking officials from the Federal Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía General de la República).
Julian held up a thick leather binder and a tablet connected to the room's main audiovisual system. "With the authorization of the Federal Court, we are presenting evidence of systematic financial fraud, medical homicide, and conspiracy."
Before Veronica could react, the massive projector screen behind the stage flickered to life. Bank statements appeared, detailing millions of dollars transferred from the Camila Elizondo Foundation directly into offshore accounts controlled by Veronica to settle massive gambling debts in Macao and Las Vegas.
Then, the audio played.
The crystal-clear voice of Veronica Ibarra filled the silent ballroom: "...increase the dosage of the synthetic hormone gradually. Make sure it looks like post-partum eclampsia. If she survives the birth, she cannot survive the week. Hector will be too broken to question the autopsy..."
The ballroom exploded into utter chaos. Women screamed, men shouted in outrage, and the foundation board members backed away from Veronica as if she were a venomous snake.
Veronica looked around frantically, her polished mask completely shattered, revealing the terrifying monster underneath. She backed toward the side exit, but Mariana stepped directly into her path.
"Camila trusted you," Mariana said softly, her dark eyes flashing with righteous fury. "She loved you like a sister. And you sold her life for paper."
"Get out of my way, you pathetic nobody!" Veronica spat, lunging forward to shove Mariana aside.
But Hector caught Veronica’s wrist in a vise-like grip, halting her instantly. The two federal officers stepped up, pulling out handcuffs.
"Dr. Veronica Ibarra, you are under arrest for first-degree murder, embezzlement, and child endangerment," the lead federal agent declared, snapping the steel cuffs onto her wrists.

As Veronica was dragged out of the ballroom, screaming curses that echoed off the gilded walls, the high-society crowd stood in stunned silence.
Hector turned to Mariana, reaching out to hold her hand tightly in front of everyone. The room broke into hesitant, then thunderous applause. But Hector didn't care about their applause. He looked down at Mariana, knowing that the darkest night was finally over, and the long road to healing had officially begun.
