Chapter 10 - The Sacred Rhythm

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, casting long, golden streaks across the nursery of the Cassano estate.

Lauren sat in the large wooden rocking chair by the window, her white coat gone, wearing a soft gray sweater. Nestled against her chest was a newborn baby girl—Isabella Cassano the second—her own daughter, born just three weeks prior.

The room was perfectly quiet, save for the gentle hum of a modern, clean air filtration system and the rhythmic creak of the rocking chair.

The door clicked open softly. Alessandro stepped inside, his tie loosened, his jacket thrown over his arm. He walked over to the chair, kneeling down beside it so he was at eye level with his wife and daughter.

He reached out, his long, scarred index finger gently brushing the baby’s tiny, perfect hand. The infant’s fingers curled instinctively around his, holding on tight.

"She looks just like you," Alessandro whispered, his dark eyes filled with a profound, reverent warmth.

"She has your stubbornness," Lauren whispered back, resting her head against his shoulder. "She refused to go to sleep until she heard your car pull into the driveway."

Alessandro let out a soft, genuine laugh, kissing Lauren’s forehead before leaning down to press a tender kiss to his daughter’s tiny crown.

Lauren looked out the window at the calm, dark waters of the lake. Two years ago, she had been a broke, exhausted night nurse, drowning in debt and hiding behind a supply cart, watching a flatline threaten to destroy a family. She had broken every rule in the room because she believed that life was worth fighting for.

And in breaking those rules, she hadn't just saved a baby. She had saved the man beside her. She had pulled him out of the darkness of his world and built a new one on a foundation of healing, trust, and absolute love.

The baby let out a soft sigh, her tiny chest rising and falling in a perfect, healthy, sacred rhythm.

"We did it, Lauren," Alessandro murmured, his hand resting over hers on the baby’s blanket. "They're safe. We're safe."

"Yes," Lauren smiled, closing her eyes as the peace of the room wrapped around them like a shield. "We are."
