Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Two years later.

The grand opening of the Hayes-Cassano Children’s Hospital was the biggest event the Chicago medical community had seen in a century. The massive, state-of-the-art facility on the south side was funded entirely by the Cassano foundation—a complete restructuring of the family’s wealth into legitimate, philanthropic enterprises.

The hospital’s VIP wing didn't have old storage models. It had the most advanced, silicone-only neonatal equipment in the world, personal protective protocols designed by Lauren herself.

Lauren stood in the grand glass atrium, dressed in a sharp white laboratory coat over a tailored dress. She was now the Director of Neonatal Medicine, having completed her advanced degrees with the full financial and logistical backing of her husband.

"You look beautiful, Dr. Hayes-Cassano," a deep voice purred behind her.

She turned to find Alessandro standing there, holding a massive bouquet of white roses. He looked relaxed, the cold, dead look in his eyes entirely replaced by a deep, quiet contentment. He had systematically dismantled the illegal operations of his syndicate over the last twenty-four months, transitioning every asset into real estate, shipping, and medical technology. He was no longer a crime boss; he was a titan of industry.

"Thank you, Alessandro," she smiled, taking the roses and leaning up to kiss his cheek. "Did you bring the VIPs?"

From behind Alessandro, Isabella walked in, looking healthy and radiant. Beside her was Matteo, now a energetic, chubby two-and-a-half-year-old boy with dark curls and a laugh that filled the room. He was holding onto Marcus’s hand, the giant bodyguard looking completely helpless as the toddler dragged him toward the ribbon-cutting display.

"Auntie Lauren!" Matteo shouted, breaking free from Marcus and sprinting across the polished floor.

Lauren knelt down, catching him in her arms and lifting him easily into a hug. She pressed her face against his warm cheek, hearing the steady, beautifully strong beat of his heart against her shoulder.
