Chapter 8 - The Shift of Power

Three months later.
The winter snow had covered Chicago in a thick, pristine blanket of white. The recovery had been long, but Lauren’s youth and resilience had pulled her through. The scar on her side was now a faint pink line—a reminder of the night she had chosen to be a shield.
The grand dining room of the Cassano estate was filled with light. It was the first formal gathering since the Moretti war had ended. The heads of the remaining five syndicates in the city were seated around the massive mahogany table, their faces tense, their hands visible. They had all seen what Alessandro did to the family that tried to touch his nephew.
Alessandro sat at the head of the table, looking every bit the emperor of the city. But tonight, he wasn't alone.
The double doors opened, and Marcus stepped inside, bowing slightly.
Lauren walked into the room. She wore a stunning, deep sapphire velvet gown that complemented the natural warmth of her skin. Her hair was styled perfectly, and on her left hand, a massive, flawless emerald cut diamond caught the light of the chandelier. She didn't look like a terrified nurse anymore. She carried herself with the quiet, unyielding confidence of a woman who had faced death and won.
Every man at the table stood up instantly—a gesture of absolute respect that was usually reserved only for Alessandro.
Alessandro stood as well, walking down the length of the table to take her hand. He led her to the chair right beside his, the seat that had remained empty since his father’s death thirty years ago.
"Gentlemen," Alessandro said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "This is Lauren Cassano. She holds my name, she holds my heart, and she holds the keys to this family. If anyone in this city so much as looks at her with disrespect, it will be treated as an act of war against me. Do we understand each other?"
The five syndicate bosses nodded in unison, their expressions grave.

"Understood, Mr. Cassano," the oldest boss said, raising his glass toward Lauren. "To the lady."
Lauren looked around the table, then at her husband. She realized then that power didn't have to be corrupt. In her hands, this power would be used to build clinics on the south side, to fund pediatric research that modern hospitals ignored, and to ensure that no broke night nurse would ever have to choose between her job and a child’s life again.
