Chapter 8 - BLOODLINES AND BETRAYAL

"Who is that?" Brooklyn whispered, stepping behind Marcus.

I recognized the voice immediately. It belonged to Judge Thomas Sterling—William Sterling’s younger brother and the current senior judge of the Chatham County Superior Court. The patriarch who had maintained the family's legal protection in Georgia for over four decades.

"Thomas!" I shouted up the stairwell, stepping into the red emergency light. "Put the gun down! The FBI already arrested William in New York! The entire country knows what your family did!"

A cold laugh echoed down the stairs. "William was a fool! He thought he could play corporate games in Manhattan and pretend he was a refined businessman. But down here in Georgia, we protect our family name by any means necessary!"

Thomas Sterling stepped to the top of the basement stairs. He was an elderly man in his late sixties, wearing a dark wool coat and holding a double-barreled hunting shotgun. Behind him stood two deputy sheriffs—corrupt officers loyal to the Sterling name.

"You found Richard's hidden cellar, didn't you?" Thomas said, his shotgun trained down the stairs. "My brother Richard was always weak. He thought he could give away our family fortune to a penniless waitress. And now you come back here, bringing that old woman into our town, trying to ruin our legacy."

"Your legacy is built on kidnapping, poisoning, and extortion, Thomas!" I declared, taking a cautious step up the stairs, keeping myself between the shotgun and my daughter. "Look around you! Everything you did is documented in this ledger. The FBI has real-time access to my cloud servers right now. If anything happens to us in this basement, you and every deputy in this county will spend the rest of your lives in federal prison!"

Thomas’s hand twitched on the trigger, his face contorting with rage. "You think federal agents intimidate me in my own state?! I own this county!"

"He might own the county, Judge Sterling," a cold voice suddenly announced from the living room behind Thomas, "but he doesn't own the State Police."

CRASH!

The front windows of the cottage shattered as flashbangs illuminated the main floor. Dozens of Georgia State Tactical Officers flooded into the house, laser sights painting the walls and ceiling.

"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!"

The two corrupt deputies immediately threw their handguns onto the floor, raising their hands in panic. Thomas Sterling spun around, raising his shotgun toward the tactical officers, but was tackled instantly by three officers, crashing hard onto the wooden floorboards. The shotgun clattered harmlessly down the basement stairs.

"CLEAR!" an officer shouted.

Marcus and I led Brooklyn up the stairs into the living room. My mother, Rose, was sitting safely in the corner, protected by two of my private security officers who had locked down the front entry during the commotion.

Agent Sarah Lin walked through the shattered front door, holding an official federal execution warrant. She looked down at Thomas Sterling, who was being cuffed on the floor.

"Thomas Sterling," Agent Lin said calmly. "By authority of the Federal District Court, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice, civil rights violations, and conspiracy to commit murder. Take him away."

As the state police dragged Thomas out into the night, the cottage fell quiet once more. The heavy air of fear and oppression that had hung over 412 River Street for thirty-three years finally began to dissipate.

Rose looked at me, her eyes filled with tears of relief. "Is it really over, Christopher? Are we finally free?"

I walked over, knelt in front of my mother, and took her hands in mine. "It’s over, Mom. The Sterlings can never hurt us again."
