Chapter 5 - THE TIDE TURNS

The silence in the penthouse was broken by the frantic ringing of William’s cell phone. He pulled it out with trembling hands. On the screen were dozens of emergency calls from the Sterling Holdings Board of Directors, corporate attorneys, and news executives.

"Boss! We have to go NOW!" one of William’s gunmen yelled, looking in horror out the window. Down on Fifth Avenue, the sound of dozens of police sirens was rapidly rising, cutting through the night air. The entire city had just witnessed a billionaire holding a family hostage in real time.

William stared at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of panic and pure hatred. "You... you destroyed us! You destroyed ninety years of the Sterling name in five minutes!"

"You destroyed yourself thirty years ago when you tore a child from his mother," I replied, taking a step closer to him.

"Kill him!" William screamed at his primary gunman. "KILL THEM ALL!"

Before the gunman could raise his firearm toward me, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse exploded inward. Marcus and my tactical security team breached the room, flashbang grenades detonating with a blinding light and a deafening report.

BANG!

The bright flash stunned William’s men. Marcus rushed forward, executing a swift tackle that slammed the armed guard to the marble floor, disarming him instantly. The second guard tried to run toward the private balcony, but Vance intercepted him, forcing him to his knees and securing him in heavy plastic zip-ties.

I didn't waste a second. I lunged forward, catching Brooklyn as she scrambled off the couch, pulling her tightly into my chest. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"

"I'm fine, Dad! I'm fine!" she sobbed, holding onto me with all her strength.

I turned around to check on my mother. Rose was trembling in her wheelchair, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. I knelt beside her, wrapping my arms around her frail shoulders. "It's over, Mom. It's over."

William was backed up against the large glass windows, panting heavily, his hair disheveled, his pristine suit crumpled. He looked like a cornered beast.

"You think this is over, Alexander?" William spat, his voice trembling with venom. "You think broadcasting a video makes you safe? I have files on every politician, every judge in Georgia and New York. I will be out on bail in two hours, and I will tear down everything you love!"

"You won't be getting bail, Mr. Sterling," a stern voice declared from the foyer.

A squad of armed FBI agents, led by Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Financial Crimes and Domestic Terrorism Division, pushed into the penthouse, weapons raised.

"William Sterling," Agent Lin stated coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, illegal wiretapping, kidnapping, and human trafficking related to the events of 1993 in Savannah, Georgia. Don't make a move."

William stared at the steel cuffs in shock. "Do you know who I am?! Call Mayor Vance! Call Chief Justice—"

"Save it for your arraignment," Agent Lin interrupted, slapping the cuffs around his wrists with a heavy metallic click. "The Department of Justice has already frozen all personal and corporate assets linked to Sterling Holdings. Your board of directors just removed you as chairman thirty seconds ago in an emergency vote."

As the FBI agents dragged a shouting, cursing William Sterling out of my penthouse, the heavy silence of safety finally washed over the room.

Dr. Vance walked back into the room with two paramedics, quickly examining my mother and Brooklyn to ensure they were uninjured.

"She’s in shock, Alexander," Dr. Vance said, administering a mild sedative to Rose. "She needs rest, medical detoxification for the poison, and quiet. The toxicity in her system can be reversed, but it will take months of specialized therapy."

"She will have the best care in the world," I said, kissing my mother’s forehead as she slowly closed her eyes, exhausted from the ordeal.

Brooklyn came and stood beside me, taking my hand. "Dad... what happens now? The media is going to be outside our door for months."

I looked out the massive window at the city lights below. The story was far from finished. Catching William was only the first step. To truly heal the wounds of thirty years, we had to go back to where the nightmare first began.

"Pack your bags, Brooklyn," I said softly, looking at my daughter. "We’re going to Savannah."
