Chapter 7 - THE SAVANNAH ARCHIVES

The air grew cool and damp as we descended the narrow stairs beneath the cottage. The beam of my flashlight revealed a large, subterranean room that looked more like a high-security vault than a home basement. Reinforced concrete walls lined the space, surrounded by rows of fireproof filing cabinets and server racks that hummed softly in the dark.
"This wasn't built by a poor waitress," Marcus murmured, scanning the corners with his sidearm held low. "This is a corporate vault."
"Arthur Sterling," I said, realization dawning on me. "My grandfather didn't just take me from my mother and lock her up. He kept this entire property under private ownership to store the family's dark history away from corporate audits."
I walked over to the main desk in the center of the room. On it sat a thick leather ledger stamped with the Sterling family crest. I opened the cover. The yellowed pages were filled with handwritten entries dating back to the late 1980s.
Brooklyn shone her light over my shoulder as I flipped through the pages. "Dad... look at these names."
The ledger was a master index of extortion. Arthur Sterling—and later William Sterling—had used their wealth to fund illegal land acquisitions, political bribes, and forced adoptions across the state of Georgia. But as I flipped to the section marked 1993, my heart stopped.
There was a full file labeled: PROJECT CHRISTOPHER STERLING.
Inside were the original medical documents from the hospital where I was born, my real birth certificate showing my father Richard Sterling's signature, and the illegal transfer papers that stripped Rose of her parental rights without her knowledge.
Attached to the back of the file was an envelope marked with my father's handwriting: To My Son, Christopher.
My fingers trembled as I opened the unsealed envelope and pulled out a letter written in blue fountain pen ink.
My dearest Christopher,
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer here to protect you and your mother. My family is powerful, driven by greed, and terrified of anything they cannot control. They view my love for Rose as a threat to their dynasty.
I have hidden half of my personal estate—assets independent of Sterling Holdings—into a trust under your birth name. The keys to this trust, along with full ownership of our real estate holdings, are secured in a vault in London, accessible only by you and your mother together.
Do not let them break your spirit. You have your mother's heart and my determination. Protect her.
With all my love,
Your Father, Richard.
A heavy silence descended upon the basement. Tears gathered in my eyes as I read my father's final words. For thirty-three years, I believed I was an unwanted child abandoned in a cold world. The truth was that my father had died trying to shield us, leaving behind the means for our salvation.
"Dad," Brooklyn said softly, placing her hand on my arm. "Grandfather Richard loved you."
"He did," I whispered, holding the letter close to my chest. "He loved us both."
Suddenly, the hum of the basement server racks abruptly cut off. The low emergency red lights flickered on, casting blood-red shadows across the concrete walls.
"Boss," Marcus warned, his voice tense as he looked up at the ceiling. "Sensors at the top of the stairs just tripped. Someone just entered the house."

From above us, the heavy sound of footsteps echoed on the wooden floorboards of the living room, followed by the cold, metallic rack of a shotgun being loaded.
"Alexander Miller!" a booming voice called down the stairwell—a voice thick with a heavy Southern drawl. "You're trespassing on private Sterling land. Step out into the light with your hands up, or none of you are leaving this cellar alive!"
