Chapter 8 - The Crayon Skyscraper

Six months later.

The autumn air around Lake Norman was crisp and cool, turning the leaves on the oak trees into shades of gold, amber, and deep red.

The patio behind the lake house was filled with laughter and the delicious smell of a barbecue.

Four-year-old Lily was running across the lush green lawn wearing a pair of bright yellow rain boots, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Daniel had given her for her birthday two weeks ago.

"Slow down, Lily!" Grace called out with a laugh, stepping out onto the stone patio wearing a warm cream sweater and dark jeans.

She looked healthy, confident, and radiant. As Executive Director of the Whitfield Foundation, she had already overseen the opening of two emergency family shelters in Charlotte, gaining widespread respect throughout the city's non-profit community.

Daniel walked out onto the patio behind her, carrying two glasses of apple cider.

He stepped up beside Grace, wrapping one arm comfortably around her waist and pulling her close against his side. Grace leaned into his warmth naturally, resting her head against his shoulder.

"She loves that puppy," Daniel smiled, watching Lily roll on the grass with the dog.

"She loves you," Grace corrected softly, looking up at him. "She spent two hours yesterday drawing another picture for your office."

"Really?" Daniel raised an eyebrow, amused. "What is it this time?"

"It’s a house," Grace smiled, her brown eyes shining with deep affection. "With three giant stick figures. And a puppy."

Daniel’s heart swelled with a warmth he had never known existed during his years of building corporate empires and attending fancy galas. He turned Grace in his arms so he was facing her, holding her hands in his.

"Grace," Daniel spoke softly, his voice full of deep emotion. "When I fell on that marble floor six months ago, I thought my life was ending. I thought I was surrounded by emptiness."

He lifted his hand, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Now I realize that fall was the best thing that ever happened to me. Because it cleared away the fake things so I could finally see what was real."

Grace looked up at him, her heart overflowing. "You saved yourself, Daniel. I just held the towel."

"You saved my soul, Grace," Daniel whispered.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Grace’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth as Daniel sank smoothly down onto one knee on the stone patio.

He opened the box.

Inside rested a simple, breathtaking ring—a flawless round-cut diamond set on a plain band of polished gold. No excessive drama, no second-hand lies, no vanity. Just pure, timeless elegance.

"Grace Parker," Daniel said, looking up at her with clear, unshakeable devotion. "You were there for me when I broke. Will you stay with me while we build the rest of our lives? Will you marry me?"

Across the lawn, little Lily stopped running, clutching her puppy, watching them with wide, excited eyes.

Grace looked down at the man kneeling before her—the man who had framed her daughter's drawing, who had fought for justice, and who loved her with absolute purity.

"Yes!" Grace cried out, tears of joy spilling down her cheeks. "Yes, Daniel! Of course I will!"

Daniel stood up, slipping the gold ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her deeply under the golden autumn trees.

Lily came running across the lawn, giggling and jumping up and down. "Yay! Daniel is going to be my daddy!"

Daniel set Grace down, knelt on the patio, and pulled Lily into a warm, big hug, holding both of them tight against his heart.
