Chapter 4 - The Memory Trap

The following morning, Daniel returned to his Charlotte estate in a wheelchair, playing his role as a dazed, recovering billionaire to perfection.

A thick white bandage covered his forehead, his left arm was resting in a sling, and he wore a vacant, tired expression that easily deceived the household staff and visitors.

Vanessa met him at the front door, putting on a dramatic display of affection and relief.

"Oh, Daniel, my sweet darling!" she cried, rushing forward to kiss his cheek while keeping a careful eye on the local news camera crew parked near the main gates. "Thank God you're home! The doctors said you need absolute rest and zero stress!"

"Thank you... Vanessa," Daniel said slowly, stumbling slightly over her name as if trying to recall it. "My head... it feels foggy."

Vanessa’s eyes flickered with a hidden spark of excitement. She exchanged a quick, knowing look with Richard Vance, who was standing right behind her holding a leather briefcase.

"Don't worry about a thing, sweetheart," Vanessa cooed, guiding his wheelchair into the grand living room. "Richard and I are going to handle everything. You just rest."

By three o'clock that afternoon, Daniel was resting in his master bedroom suite.

Downstairs in the private study, Vanessa and Richard were holding an urgent meeting. They had closed the heavy mahogany doors, unaware that forty-eight hours earlier, Daniel had instructed a home security firm to install small, invisible directional microphones inside the decorative crown molding above the bookshelf.

In the small pantry behind the kitchen, Grace sat quietly on a wooden stool with a pair of sleek wireless headphones tucked into her ears, connected directly to a encrypted laptop on her lap.

She hit record as Richard’s voice filled her ears.

"Is he really memory-impaired, Vanessa?" Richard’s voice was tense, greedy. "Are you sure the doctors aren't exaggerating?"

"I spoke to Dr. Evans myself," Vanessa’s sharp voice laughed. "Daniel didn't even recognize his own assistant this morning! He kept asking what year it was! He remembers building the company, but he has zero memory of the last eight months—which means he doesn't remember signing the prenuptial agreement revisions!"

"Did you get the original papers out of his safe?" Richard asked.

"I spent two hours trying to open it while he was in the hospital," Vanessa replied, her tone turning frustrated. "The biometric lock needs his thumbprint. But it doesn't matter. If we present the modified merger papers tomorrow during the emergency board meeting, he’ll sign them without question because he trusts you implicitly."

"We need to move fast," Richard warned. "The offshore holding company in the Caymans is ready. Once he signs the restructuring authorization, twenty-two million dollars in liquid capital from Whitfield Development will be transferred to our joint account before he ever regains his memory."

"And what about the wedding?" Vanessa asked, her voice laced with cold amusement. "Do I still have to marry him?"

"Play the devoted fiancée for another two months until the transfer clears," Richard chuckled. "Then file for divorce on the grounds of mental incapacity. You’ll walk away with the lake house, thirty percent of his stock, and eleven million in cash."

In the pantry, Grace’s hands were shaking as she watched the audio waveforms dance across her laptop screen.

She saved the file, backed it up to an encrypted cloud drive, and closed the laptop.

Ten minutes later, Grace walked up the back staircase carrying a tray with fresh tea and a bowl of soup for Daniel.

She knocked twice on the master bedroom door.

"Come in," Daniel called out.

Grace stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind her and locking it.

Daniel immediately stood up from his armchair, throwing off his arm sling and walking briskly toward her. The vacant, confused look on his face had vanished, replaced by a razor-sharp, lethal focus.

"Did you get it?" Daniel asked quietly.

Grace pulled a small USB flash drive from her apron pocket and set it beside his teacup.

"Every single word, Mr. Whitfield," Grace said, her voice steady. "They’re planning to divert twenty-two million dollars during tomorrow's emergency board meeting at ten o'clock."

Daniel picked up the USB drive, turning it over in his hand. A dark, dangerous smile spread across his handsome face.

"They think I forgot the last six months," Daniel whispered, looking up at Grace. "Tomorrow morning, I’m going to remind them who owns this company."
