Chapter 5 - The Emergency Boardroom

At nine-thirty the following morning, the executive boardroom on the top floor of Whitfield Development’s downtown skyscraper was packed with twelve senior board members, three corporate attorneys, and several major shareholders.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Richard Vance, wearing an expensive tailored suit, looking every bit the confident interim leader.

Beside him sat Vanessa, looking elegant in a black designer dress, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief whenever a board member offered their condolences regarding Daniel's 'tragic accident.'

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Richard began, standing up and opening his leather folder. "As you know, our visionary founder, Daniel Whitfield, suffered a severe fall at his home two days ago. While he is physically stable, his medical team has confirmed significant cognitive impairment and retro-amnesia."

A sad murmur rippled through the board members.

"Because of this unfortunate tragedy," Richard continued smoothly, "and to protect the company's stock from market volatility, we need to immediately execute the Emergency Corporate Restructuring Protocol. This document authorizes the temporary transfer of executive decision-making power and liquid asset management to myself and Miss Vanessa Cole, as Daniel's primary beneficiary."

Richard signaled to his assistant, who began distributing thick blue folders to each board member.

"Page twelve contains the asset realignment," Richard added, his voice filled with practiced gravity. "We will be consolidating twenty-two million dollars of unallocated capital into an external management fund to shield it from hostile takeover attempts while Daniel recovers."

"Is Daniel aware of this transfer?" asked Arthur Pendelton, a veteran board member and long-time friend of Daniel’s father.

"Daniel is... unfortunately not in a mental state to comprehend complex financial structures right now, Arthur," Vanessa interjected softly, offering a tearful, tragic smile. "It breaks my heart to see him like this, but as his future wife, I must protect his legacy."

"How generous of you, Vanessa."

The deep, powerful voice boomed through the boardroom, cutting through the silence like a thunderclap.

The double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung wide open.

Daniel Whitfield walked into the room.

He wasn't in a wheelchair. He wasn't wearing a sling. His posture was imposing, his stride was powerful, and his blue eyes were sharp as polished steel.

Behind him walked two armed plainclothes detectives from the Charlotte Police Department, accompanied by Grace Parker, who carried a sleek black briefcase.

The entire boardroom went dead silent.

Richard Vance dropped his pen. His face went entirely white, his jaw hanging open in pure, unadulterated shock.

Vanessa gasped, scrambling backward in her leather chair so fast she knocked over her glass of water. "Dan... Daniel?! What are you doing here?! You're supposed to be in bed!"

Daniel walked straight to the head of the table, stepping into Richard’s space until the lawyer involuntarily scrambled out of his seat.

Daniel pulled off the small bandage above his eyebrow, revealing a faint, pink line that had almost entirely healed.

"My head is feeling remarkably clear today, Richard," Daniel said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly cold. "In fact, I don't think I’ve ever seen things more clearly in my entire life."

"Daniel, please!" Vanessa stammered, rushing to his side, reaching for his arm. "You're confused! You're suffering from memory loss! You need to go back to the hospital!"

Daniel turned his head slowly, looking down at her hand on his sleeve.

"I didn't lose my memory, Vanessa," Daniel said smoothly, stepping out of her reach. "I just lost my tolerance for snakes."
