Chapter 7 - The Aspen Extraction

Alexander didn't hesitate. Leaving Emma and Oliver under the strict protection of Victoria’s personal security detail at the hotel, he boarded his private aircraft and flew directly to Aspen, Colorado. The winter air was freezing as he landed, the snow-capped mountains looking like silent, ancient judges against the dark sky.
He drove a rented SUV up the winding mountain roads to the Silver Linings Retreat, an ultra-exclusive, high-security psychiatric clinic hidden behind miles of pine forests. The facility catered exclusively to the wealthy and powerful, promising absolute discretion and ironclad privacy.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Hale," the clinic's director, Dr. Elena Rostova, said as they sat in her luxurious leather-paneled office. "Patient confidentiality is absolute under federal law. Even if you are her husband, I cannot release Mrs. Hale’s medical evaluation or treatment records without a direct, certified court order from a Colorado federal judge."
"Dr. Rostova, my children are in danger," Alexander said, leaning across the desk, his voice trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and desperation. "My wife held a weapon over our eight-year-old daughter last night. She crushed glass on the floor. Her father is using his judicial seat in Illinois to suppress the investigation. If I don't get these records by Monday morning, my kids go back into that house. I am not asking you as a billionaire; I am begging you as a father."
Dr. Rostova looked at Alexander, her professional composure softening for a fraction of a second. She looked down at the photograph Alexander placed on her desk—the drawing Emma had made of the shadow man and the cage.
"I cannot give you the file, Mr. Hale," Dr. Rostova said softly, her voice dropping into a low, deliberate whisper. "It is physically locked in our secure archive downstairs. However... our facility undergoes a routine digital backup every Friday night at 11:00 p.m. The server room is located at the end of the east corridor. The technician on duty usually takes his break at 11:15. I cannot stop someone from entering that room if the door happens to be left unlatched."
Alexander looked at his watch. It was 10:45 p.m. He stood up, nodding gently to the doctor. "Thank you, Dr. Rostova."
At 11:15 p.m., Alexander slipped down the quiet, dimly lit corridor of the clinic. The door to the server room was slightly ajar, just as the doctor had implied. He stepped inside, the hum of the massive computer racks filling his ears. He pulled a high-speed encrypted flash drive from his pocket—a tool his firm used for transferring secure architectural blueprints—and plugged it into the main terminal hub.
The digital progress bar crawled across the screen with agonizing slowness. 10%... 40%... 80%...

Suddenly, the heavy heavy door of the server room swung open. Standing there was Julian Vance, Judge Lane’s private investigator, his hand resting inside his heavy winter coat where a weapon was clearly concealed.
"Mr. Hale," Julian sneered, a cold, predatory smile stretching across his face. "Your father-in-law anticipated you might try something desperate like this. Step away from the terminal. The judge has a lot of plans for your future, and they don't include you leaving Colorado with that data."
