Chapter 4 - The Legal Fortress

By 6:00 a.m. the next morning, Alexander was standing in the glass-walled conference room of Hale & Associates, his development firm. Across from him sat Victoria Vance, the most ruthless and high-priced family law attorney in Chicago. Victoria was a woman who didn't just win cases; she completely dismantled her opponents.

"The situation is volatile, Alexander," Victoria said, reviewing the photographs Alexander had taken of the children's bedroom before they left. "Caroline’s father is Judge Arthur Lane. He has immense leverage in the domestic courts. If we file a standard divorce and custody petition, her legal team will immediately secure an emergency injunction demanding the return of the children to the marital home, claiming parental alienation on your part."

"I don't care about her father, Victoria," Alexander said, his hands clenched into fists on the mahogany table. "She was holding a glass weapon over my children. She crushed glass on the floor where my four-year-old was crying. I am not letting them back into that house."

"Then we need hard evidence," Victoria replied, her eyes narrowing with a sharp, professional intensity. "The word of an eight-year-old girl, unfortunately, can be torn apart by an aggressive cross-examination. We need medical documentation of psychological trauma, and we need to audit that house. Did you have security cameras inside the residence?"

Alexander froze. "Only in the foyer and the back gardens. Caroline always insisted that indoor cameras were a violation of her privacy. She said she didn't want staff or security monitoring her daily life."

"Of course she didn't," Victoria muttered, a cold smile touching her lips. "She knew exactly what she was hiding. But here’s what we do have: your neighbor, Mrs. Abigail Albright. She’s called the local police twice regarding screaming coming from your property over the last three months. I’ve already subpoenaed those emergency dispatch logs. We are going to file for an Ex Parte Emergency Order of Protection this morning. If the judge signs it, Caroline will be legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of you or the children."

The door to the conference room opened, and Alexander’s personal assistant, Marcus, stepped inside, his face pale. "Mr. Hale, your wife is downstairs in the lobby. She brought two private security guards and a legal representative from her father’s chambers. She’s demanding to see the children."

Alexander stood up, the protective instinct of a father completely overriding his corporate decorum. "Keep her downstairs, Marcus. I’m going down there myself."

"Alexander, no," Victoria warned, standing up to block him. "That is exactly what she wants. She wants you to cause a scene in public so she can document your 'erratic behavior' for the court. Let me handle the lobby. You stay here and look after your kids."
