Chapter 5 - The Corporate Confrontation

Victoria Vance descended to the marble lobby of the Hale Building like an assassin in a tailored suit. Caroline stood near the reception desk, looking immaculate in a cream-colored wool coat, her large designer sunglasses hiding her eyes. Behind her stood two burly men in black suits and an older man carrying a leather briefcase—Robert Sterling, Judge Lane’s senior clerk.
"Where is my husband, Victoria?" Caroline demanded as the lawyer approached. "And where are my children? Alexander took them out of their beds in the middle of the night like a criminal. I am filing kidnapping charges if those boys and Emma aren't in my car within ten minutes."
"Mrs. Hale," Victoria said, her voice dropping into an icy, perfectly modulated tone that cut through the lobby’s background noise. "Your husband is currently preparing his filings for an Ex Parte Emergency Order of Protection. If you do not leave this building immediately, I will instruct our security team to detain you for harassment, and we will present the security footage of your little entourage to the family court judge by noon."
Robert Sterling stepped forward, his expression grave. "Ms. Vance, let’s be reasonable here. Judge Lane is deeply concerned about this sudden family disruption. Alexander is a public figure; a public scandal regarding child abuse allegations would completely destroy his firm’s upcoming public offering. Surely we can settle this domestic misunderstanding privately within the family."
"This is not a misunderstanding, Mr. Sterling," Victoria hissed, leaning in close to Caroline. "I’ve seen the photos of the children’s room. I’ve read the statements from the neighbors. If you think Judge Lane’s name is enough to protect a woman who terrorizes her own children, you are deeply mistaken. We are going to trial, Caroline. And by the time I am done with you, your perfect social reputation will be completely buried under a mountain of forensic evidence."
Caroline took off her sunglasses, her eyes flashing with a sudden, manic intensity. "You think you can take them from me?" she whispered, her voice trembling with rage. "I gave up my career for those children! I built Alexander’s public image! They belong to me! If Alexander tries to ruin me, I’ll take down his entire empire share by share. I know where the money is, Victoria. I know every account, every offshore shell company his firm used for the Dubai project. Tell him that."
She turned on her heel and marched out of the building, her security guards following closely behind.

Upstairs in the executive suite, Alexander watched her departure through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. He held a sleeping Oliver in his lap, while Emma sat next to him, silently drawing a picture of a large, black wall between a little girl and a shadow. He knew Caroline wasn't bluffing about the company. She was a brilliant financial strategist before they married; she had helped him structure the international assets for his firm. If she chose to go to war, she could freeze his corporate funds, halting his construction projects across three continents.
But as he looked down at the tiny scar on Emma’s hand—a small cut she had hidden from him for weeks—Alexander realized he didn't care about the billions. He’d burn the whole empire to the ground if it meant his children could sleep without fear.
