Chapter 7 - The Arrests at Dawn

The next morning, the sun rose over Cherry Hills, casting a bright gold light across the manicured lawns of the Sterling-Vance estate. But the peace of the wealthy enclave was shattered by the roaring sirens of federal tactical vehicles.

Victoria Sterling-Vance was in her silk robe, sipping tea on her veranda, when ten armed federal agents breached the front gates.

"Arthur! Diego! What is happening?!" Victoria screamed, dropping her porcelain cup—this time, it shattered against her own stone floor, an ironic echo of the dinner party.

Arthur Sterling-Vance tried to flee through the back gardens toward his private tennis courts, but he was immediately cut off by two FBI agents who tackled the elderly tycoon to the ground, pinning his expensive linen shirt into the wet grass.

"Arthur Sterling-Vance, you are under arrest for federal environmental racketeering, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice," an agent announced as the steel cuffs snapped shut.

Inside the house, Diego was found hiding in the master closet, packing a duffel bag filled with cash and passport documents. He didn't even fight back as Agent Ross dragged him out into the grand foyer in his pajamas, forcing him down onto the very same marble floor where he had stood so arrogantly two nights prior.

"This is all Valerie's fault!" Victoria shrieked at the top of her lungs, her perfect hair disheveled, her face twisted in a mask of manic rage as she was also handcuffed for her role as a registered board member of the fraudulent shell companies. "That middle-class nobody ruined us! She was supposed to be a loyal daughter-in-law!"

Natalie stood at the top of the grand staircase, watching her in-laws get paraded out of the house in chains. She caught Agent Ross's eye and gave him a brief nod. She had packed her bags hours ago. She was leaving this family today, and she was never looking back.

The news of the arrests broke across Denver like a tidal wave. Every television station showed live footage of the Sterling-Vance family being led into the federal courthouse. The reputation they had spent their entire lives protecting—the polished image of wealth, elegance, and untouchable power—was obliterated in a matter of hours.

And at the center of every news broadcast was the name Valerie Pendelton: the brilliant architect who had refused to be silenced, who had taken a literal blow to the head and used the fragments to dismantle a corrupt empire.
