Chapter 5 - The Freezing Order

The luxury offices of Vance-Global Holdings looked like a high-end art gallery, but today, the atmosphere was like a funeral home. Arthur Sterling-Vance stood behind his massive glass desk, his face flushed an angry purple as three men in dark suits handed him a stack of legally certified documents.

Diego sat on the leather sofa, a heavy, dark shadow over his eyes, a pristine bandage over his own knuckles where he had accidentally cut himself on the ceramic plate during his assault on Valerie.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur roared at the process servers. "You can't freeze our development accounts! We have a five-hundred-million-dollar construction loan closing at noon!"

Clara Sterling stepped into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor, with Valerie walking right beside her. Valerie looked radiant—completely recovered, her eyes blazing with absolute confidence.

"Mr. Vance, as of 8:30 this morning, Judge Rodriguez signed a comprehensive asset freeze and an immediate injunction against Vance-Global Holdings," Clara announced smoothly, sitting down at the conference table without being asked. "Your construction loan is dead in the water."

Diego jumped to his feet, pointing an aggressive finger at Valerie. "You crazy bitch! Do you know what you’ve done? You’re destroying my family's legacy! That loan was our primary liquidity line!"

"No, Diego," Valerie said, her voice dropping like a heavy anvil into the middle of the room. "You destroyed your family's legacy the moment you mistook my patience for weakness. You thought because I didn't play your family's petty high-society games, I didn't know how the world worked. I built my career from the mud up. You inherited yours from a daddy who steals blueprints."

Arthur slammed his fists onto his desk. "Valerie, you are still legally married to my son! Any damage you do to this company damages your own marital assets! You will leave this marriage with absolutely nothing but debt if you don't drop these ridiculous claims!"

"That's where you're wrong again, Arthur," Clara said, sliding a new document across the glass. "This is a petition for an immediate bifurcated divorce on the grounds of extreme physical cruelty and corporate fraud. Furthermore, because Valerie purchased the Capitol Hill condominium prior to the marriage using entirely segregated personal funds from an inheritance and her independent architectural bonuses, it is classified as non-marital property. Your son has zero legal claim to it."

Clara looked directly at Diego. "And since we have proof that you used Valerie's corporate logins to commit industrial espionage against Apex Architecture, we are seeking a total forfeiture of your personal shares in Vance-Global as restitution for the damages caused to her professional reputation."

Diego fell back onto the sofa, his breath hitching. The reality of his situation was finally crashing down. He wasn't just facing a messy divorce; he was looking at total financial ruin and a very real possibility of a long federal prison sentence.

"Valerie, please," Diego stammered, his voice suddenly shifting into a desperate, pleading tone. "Think about our five years together. We loved each other once. My mother... she pressured me. She wanted the apartment. I just got caught in the middle."

Valerie looked at him, and for the first time, she felt absolutely nothing. No anger, no sorrow—just a profound sense of detachment from the pathetic man standing before her.

"You didn't get caught in the middle, Diego. You threw the plate," Valerie said quietly. "Enjoy the wreckage."
