Chapter 4 - The Discovery of the Secret

The Capitol Hill condominium was Valerie's sanctuary. Situated on the top floor of an elegant, turn-of-the-century brick building, it featured exposed beams, massive arched windows, and a breathtaking view of the Denver skyline. When she unlocked the door that evening, the quietness of the space washed over her like a healing balm. No shouting. No critical remarks from Victoria. No suffocating presence of a husband who secretly resented her talent.

But the peace was short-lived.

At 10:00 PM, her phone buzzed with an unknown number. She answered cautiously.

"Valerie, it's Natalie," her sister-in-law’s voice whispered frantically through the receiver. "I’m using a burner phone. Diego just posted bail. His father used a high-profile celebrity bondsman to get him out of the county jail. They are furious, Valerie. They are organizing a counter-suit to claim that you attacked him first."

"Let them try," Valerie said, her jaw tightening. "The medical reports and the 911 audio speak for themselves."

"You don't understand," Natalie pressed, her voice trembling. "I’m in Arthur’s study right now. They think I'm asleep upstairs. Valerie... I found a safe behind the family portrait in the library. Diego left a folder here before the dinner. It’s labeled Project Capitol Hill. It’s not just about the transit hub easement. There is something underneath your building."

Valerie’s architectural instincts immediately flared. "What do you mean 'underneath' my building?"

"I couldn't read all the structural maps before I heard footsteps, but there’s an old underground subterranean vault system from the 1890s that connects the historical district directly to the bank reserves on 17th Street," Natalie explained rapidly. "The Vance-Global corporation has been buying up properties along that specific corridor. Your condo building is the final anchor point. If they own the building, they legally own the historical subterranean rights. Valerie, they aren't just trying to flip real estate. They are trying to hide something massive down there before the federal auditors arrive next month."

The line suddenly clicked, followed by the muffled sound of a heavy door opening in the background and Victoria's sharp voice calling out Natalie's name.

"I have to go," Natalie gasped, and the call went dead.

Valerie slowly lowered the phone. She walked over to her drafting table, pulling up the historical blueprints of the Capitol Hill district that she had archived years ago during her master’s thesis. She zoomed in on the foundational layouts of her own building.

There, hidden beneath layers of modern sewage and electrical grid schematics, was a faded, greyed-out sector labeled Sub-Level 3: Sealed Municipal Repository.

Diego hadn't just thrown a plate at her out of a sudden burst of anger. The entire marriage, the sudden pressure from his parents, the demand to transfer the title—it was all a desperate, calculated race against time to seize control of a hidden underground vault before a multi-million-dollar corporate crime was exposed.

Valerie picked up her phone again and dialed her attorney, Clara Sterling (no relation to Diego). "Clara, wake up. We need to file an emergency ex-parte injunction for a structural asset freeze on my property first thing tomorrow morning. And call the FBI's white-collar crime division. We're going underground."
