Chapter 5 – “The Price of Protecting Her”

The first rule Salvatore Marquetti had ever learned was simple.
Never let anyone become your weakness.
The second rule was even more important.
Never let your enemies know you have one.
For nine years, Salvatore followed those rules perfectly.
He built walls around himself.
He became colder.
More distant.
More dangerous.
People stopped trying to understand him because they were too afraid to get close.
That was exactly what he wanted.
A man without attachments could not be hurt.
A man without love could not be destroyed.
But then Tessa Whitlock walked into his private room carrying a tray and a tired smile.
And somehow, without even trying...
She broke every rule he had spent years creating.
The headquarters was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
Tessa noticed it immediately.
The guards were everywhere.
More than before.
Every hallway had security.
Every entrance had been reinforced.
Even the windows of the upper floors had additional protection.
She stopped near the elevator.
“Salvatore.”
He turned.
She signed:
“What happened?”
He looked away.
That told her everything.
Something was wrong.
She stepped closer.
“Don't hide things from me.”
His eyes met hers.
For a moment, she thought he would refuse.
Then he slowly signed:
“Someone tried to enter your apartment last night.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
He continued.
“They didn't get inside.”
“But they tried.”
He nodded.
Tessa felt anger rise.
Not fear.
Anger.
“Because of me.”
Salvatore immediately shook his head.
“No.”
She stared at him.
“Yes.”
Her hands moved faster.
“Because I am connected to you.”
A pause.
Then:
“Before me, your enemies attacked you.”
She pointed at herself.
“Now they're attacking me.”
Salvatore's expression hardened.
Because she was saying the thing he feared most.
That his world was poisoning hers.
He stepped closer.
His hands moved slowly.
Carefully.
“I should send you away.”
Tessa froze.
The words hurt more than she expected.
“Send me away?”
He nodded.
“You and Dany.”
For a moment, she simply stared.
Then she laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because she was hurt.
“You think you can just decide that?”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
She continued.
“You think because you have money and power, you can put me somewhere safe and make all my choices for me?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Salvatore looked surprised.
Because everyone obeyed him.
Everyone.
But Tessa didn't.
Never had.
She stepped closer.
“You keep saying you're protecting me.”
She pointed at him.
“But maybe you're just protecting yourself.”
That hit.
Hard.
Because deep down...
She was right.
Salvatore wasn't only afraid of losing her.
He was afraid of feeling that pain again.
He was afraid of caring.
Later that afternoon, Salvatore called a meeting.
The entire inner circle was present.
Marco.
His security team.
His advisors.
Everyone.
Tessa sat in the corner.
Nobody questioned her being there anymore.
That alone was shocking.
A month ago, nobody would have believed a waitress would sit in a room where decisions were made.
But nobody understood Tessa.
She didn't need power.
She didn't need a title.
She simply refused to disappear.
Salvatore stood at the head of the table.
A map of Chicago covered the screen.
“The Corvo has three locations.”
Marco pointed.
“Warehouse district.”
Another point.
“Old financial building.”
Another.
“And the third?”
Silence.
Marco looked uncomfortable.
“We don't know.”
Salvatore frowned.
That was unusual.
They always knew.
Someone was hiding information.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“I know.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Early thirties.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
Nobody moved.
Salvatore stared.
“Isabella.”
Tessa watched carefully.
There was history there.
A lot of it.
Isabella walked in.
“You still look angry.”
Salvatore's expression remained cold.
“You shouldn't be here.”
She smiled.
“You always say that.”
Tessa immediately noticed something.
The way Isabella looked at Salvatore.
The familiarity.
The confidence.
It bothered her.
And she hated that it bothered her.
She had no right.
She wasn't his girlfriend.
She wasn't anything.
Yet seeing another woman who knew him so well created a strange ache in her chest.
Isabella noticed Tessa.
Her eyes narrowed.
“So this is her.”
The room became silent.
Tessa looked confused.
“Her?”
Isabella smiled slightly.
“The woman everyone is talking about.”
Salvatore's expression changed.
“Enough.”
But Isabella continued.
“She really is different.”
Tessa didn't like the way she said it.
Not cruel.
Almost impressed.
And somehow that was worse.
After the meeting, Tessa found Isabella alone.
She hadn't planned to.
It just happened.
“You know him well.”
Isabella turned.
“Yes.”
Tessa nodded.
“How?”
A pause.
Then Isabella answered:
“Before the explosion, I was supposed to marry him.”
The words hit unexpectedly.
Tessa looked away.
“Oh.”
Isabella studied her.
“You didn't know.”
“No.”
“Salvatore doesn't talk about the past.”
“I noticed.”
Isabella smiled sadly.
“No. He doesn't.”
A moment passed.
Then Isabella said something surprising.
“He loved me.”
Tessa's chest tightened.
But then Isabella continued:
“Before everything changed.”
That sentence mattered.
Before everything changed.
Tessa looked at her.
“What happened?”
Isabella's expression became serious.
“The explosion wasn't only an attack on Salvatore.”
She lowered her voice.
“It was an attack on everyone around him.”
Tessa listened.
“Someone inside his organization betrayed him.”
A pause.
“And that person was someone we trusted.”
Tessa remembered Marco.
The suspicion.
The documents.
The fear.
“Who?”
Isabella shook her head.
“We never found out.”
Then she looked directly at Tessa.
“But now I think the person is closer than we realize.”
That night, Salvatore received information.
A name.
A location.
A betrayal.
And this time...
The evidence was undeniable.
The person who had been feeding information to the Corvo wasn't Marco.
It wasn't an enemy.
It wasn't someone outside.
It was someone inside his own house.
Someone who had access to everything.
Someone who knew his movements.
Someone who knew about Tessa.
The file was placed on his desk.
The name was visible.
Salvatore stared.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Then Marco entered.
“Boss?”
Salvatore looked up.
His expression was unreadable.
Marco immediately knew.
“What happened?”
Salvatore pushed the file forward.
Marco opened it.
His face changed.
Because the person revealed was impossible.
“No.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“No way.”
Salvatore looked toward the city.
Because the truth was always the most dangerous weapon.
And this truth was going to destroy everything.
Meanwhile, Tessa was with Dany.
They sat on the floor of the safe house.
She was helping him practice new signs.
Dany smiled.
“You're happier.”
Tessa froze.
She looked at him.
“How do you know?”
He shrugged.
Then signed:
“Your eyes.”
Her heart softened.
Because Dany had always understood things nobody else noticed.
She smiled.
“I don't know what I am.”
Dany tilted his head.
She continued:
“I met someone.”
Dany smiled immediately.
A teasing expression crossed his face.
Tessa laughed.
“No. It's complicated.”
Dany signed:
“Is he nice?”
She thought about Salvatore.
The dangerous man.
The feared man.
The man who terrified everyone.
Then she smiled.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“When nobody else is watching.”
That night, Tessa received a message.
Not from an unknown number.
From Salvatore.
Only three words.
“Come to me.”
She frowned.
Something about it felt different.
Urgent.
She arrived at headquarters minutes later.
But the moment she entered the room...
She knew.
Something had happened.
Salvatore stood by the window.
Marco was there.
And between them was a file.
Tessa looked at their faces.
“What is it?”
Nobody answered.
Finally, Salvatore turned.
His expression was unlike anything she had ever seen.
Broken.
Angry.
Lost.
He signed:
“I know who betrayed me.”
Tessa waited.
Then he continued.
And the name he revealed made the entire world stop.
“It was someone I considered family.”
Before Tessa could respond...
The lights went out.
Every alarm in the building exploded.
Gunshots echoed from below.
The Corvo had found them.
Again.
But this time was different.
Because they weren't attacking Salvatore.
They weren't attacking his empire.
They were attacking the one thing he had finally allowed himself to have.
A future.
Salvatore grabbed Tessa's hand.
Not her wrist.
Not her arm.
Her hand.
The gesture was small.
But it meant everything.
Because Salvatore Marquetti didn't hold onto people.
He let them go before they could leave him.
But now?
Now he was choosing to fight.
For her.
For Dany.
For the life he never thought he deserved.
“Stay with me.”
He signed the words.
Tessa looked at him.
And for the first time...
She saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear of dying.
Fear of losing her.
She squeezed his hand.
“I'm here.”
The alarms screamed.
The war had arrived at their doorstep.
But neither of them moved.
Because some battles were not about survival.
Some battles were about protecting the person who finally made life worth surviving.
Across the city, Adrian Bellini watched the chaos unfold.
He smiled.
“Good.”
His men looked at him.
“Everything is ready.”
Adrian nodded.
Because he knew the final move was coming.
Salvatore Marquetti had spent his whole life building an empire.
Now Adrian was going to make him choose.
The empire...
Or the woman who gave him his heart back.
May you like
And Adrian already knew the answer.
That was why he was going to destroy her first.
