Chapter 4 – “The Enemy Inside the Empire”

The first thing Tessa noticed about Salvatore Marquetti's world was that everyone was afraid.
Not just afraid of him.
Afraid of everything.
The people around him moved carefully.
They spoke carefully.
They even breathed carefully.
It was as if one wrong word could shatter the invisible order holding everything together.
And yet, standing in the middle of that dangerous world, Tessa felt something she hadn't expected.
Safe.
It confused her.
Because safety was supposed to come from ordinary things.
A locked apartment door.
A stable job.
A quiet neighborhood.
Not from a man whose name made criminals disappear.
But every time she looked at Salvatore, she saw something different from what everyone else saw.
They saw a monster.
She saw a man carrying wounds nobody had ever bothered to understand.
Three days had passed since Dany's kidnapping.
Three days since her entire life had changed.
The restaurant had become impossible.
Brett barely looked at her.
The other servers whispered constantly.
And the rumors had grown.
Some said she was manipulating Salvatore.
Some said she was his new obsession.
Some said she was going to get herself killed.
Tessa ignored all of them.
She had learned something important.
People who knew nothing always had the loudest opinions.
But there was one thing bothering her.
The way Salvatore had changed.
Before Dany was kidnapped, he had been distant.
Controlled.
Almost untouchable.
Now?
He was different.
Still quiet.
Still serious.
But he watched her constantly.
Not in a possessive way.
In a protective way.
Every time she entered a room, his eyes found her.
Every time she left, he noticed.
And somehow...
That scared her more than his anger ever could.
Because caring about someone was dangerous.
Especially someone like Salvatore.
That afternoon, Tessa found him in the training room.
She stopped at the doorway.
The man standing there didn't look like the person she knew.
He wasn't wearing his expensive suit.
His sleeves were rolled up.
His hands were wrapped.
He was fighting.
Not another person.
A punching bag.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Every hit carried years of anger.
Years of pain.
Years of silence.
“Salvatore.”
He stopped.
Slowly, he turned.
His expression softened slightly when he saw her.
She walked inside.
“What are you doing?”
He looked at the punching bag.
Then signed:
“Thinking.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“You think by punching things?”
A small smile appeared.
The smallest.
But she saw it.
“Sometimes.”
She crossed her arms.
“You know, most people just drink coffee.”
He looked at her.
“Coffee doesn't help.”
She almost laughed.
Almost.
It was strange.
She was standing in a mafia headquarters joking with the most dangerous man in Chicago.
Her old self would never believe it.
But the moment didn't last.
The door opened.
Marco entered.
And immediately, Tessa knew something was wrong.
Marco never looked nervous.
Today he did.
“Boss.”
Salvatore's expression changed.
“What?”
Marco glanced at Tessa.
Then hesitated.
Salvatore noticed.
“She stays.”
Marco looked surprised.
But nodded.
“There was another attack.”
Tessa's smile disappeared.
“Who?”
Marco placed a folder on the table.
“The Corvo.”
Salvatore opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Destroyed warehouses.
Burned vehicles.
Dead men.
Tessa looked away.
She had seen danger now.
She understood what kind of world she had stepped into.
But something else caught her attention.
A name.
She saw it written on one document.
Marco Bellini.
Her eyes narrowed.
She looked at him.
Then at Salvatore.
“Why is his name here?”
The room went silent.
Marco froze.
Salvatore picked up the paper.
His expression hardened.
The document was a payment record.
Money transferred from an unknown account.
To someone connected with Marco.
A lot of money.
Too much money.
Tessa felt the tension immediately.
Salvatore didn't accuse him.
That surprised her.
He simply asked:
“Explain.”
Marco's jaw tightened.
“I can.”
“Then do.”
Marco looked away.
For the first time since Tessa met him...
He looked guilty.
The truth came slowly.
And it was worse than anyone expected.
Nine years ago, when Salvatore was attacked, Marco had been investigating a traitor inside their organization.
But he failed.
The person escaped.
And the investigation ended.
Until now.
The money trail suggested someone had been paying Marco's younger brother.
A brother nobody knew existed.
A brother who disappeared years ago.
Salvatore looked at the documents.
His face was unreadable.
But Tessa saw something.
Hurt.
Because betrayal wasn't new to him.
It was the one wound that never healed.
“Did you know?”
Marco looked at him.
“No.”
Salvatore stared.
Marco's voice broke slightly.
“I swear to you, I didn't know.”
Silence.
The room waited.
Everyone expected anger.
Violence.
Punishment.
But Salvatore did something unexpected.
He walked away.
Because sometimes betrayal hurt more than bullets.
That night, Tessa found Salvatore alone.
Again.
She was starting to realize something.
For a powerful man surrounded by hundreds of people...
He spent most of his time alone.
She sat beside him.
No words.
No signs.
Just silence.
After a while, she asked:
“Do you trust him?”
Salvatore looked at her.
She meant Marco.
He thought for a long time.
Then signed:
“I don't know.”
That answer surprised her.
Because honesty from him was rare.
She looked at the city below.
“That's probably the hardest thing.”
He watched her.
“What?”
She signed:

“Finding out the people closest to you might be the ones who hurt you.”
Something changed in his expression.
Because he understood.
Tessa wasn't talking only about him.
She was talking about herself.
About her coworkers.
About Brett.
About everyone who had judged her without knowing her.
They were both people betrayed by those around them.
Maybe that's why they understood each other.
The next day, something happened that changed everything.
Tessa returned to the restaurant.
She had decided she couldn't hide forever.
She needed her job.
She needed normal.
But normal was gone.
The moment she entered, Brett approached.
His smile was back.
That worried her more than anger.
“Tessa.”
She ignored him.
“Move.”
He laughed softly.
“Still arrogant.”
She stopped.
Slowly turned.
“What did you say?”
Brett stepped closer.
“You think because Salvatore likes you, you're untouchable?”
The kitchen became quiet.
Tessa looked around.
Everyone was watching.
Brett continued.
“You're still just a waitress.”
She stared at him.
Then something inside her snapped.
Not anger.
Confidence.
Because she was tired of people deciding her worth.
“You're right.”
Brett smiled.
“Finally admitting it?”
“No.”
Her voice became steady.
“I am a waitress.”
She stepped closer.
“And I am also the woman who learned a language so my brother would never feel alone.”
The room went silent.
“I am the woman who worked two jobs when nobody helped me.”
Another step.
“I am the woman who survived people like you.”
Brett's smile disappeared.
“And the difference between us?”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“I never needed to hurt others to feel important.”
Nobody spoke.
For the first time...
Brett looked small.
But he wasn't finished.
Because insecure people were often the most dangerous.
That night, while Tessa was closing her station, her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
No response.
Then a voice.
A man's voice.
Cold.
“You should have stayed away from him.”
Her blood froze.
“Who is this?”
A laugh.
“You really don't know?”
The call ended.
A message appeared.
One photo.
Salvatore.
Standing beside her.
Taken without them knowing.
Below it:
“Everyone he loves dies.”
Tessa stared.
Her hands trembled.
Because suddenly she understood.
This wasn't just about Salvatore.
It was about fear.
Someone wanted her afraid enough to leave.
Someone wanted Salvatore alone again.
At that exact moment, Salvatore received another message.
The same photo.
The same warning.
But beneath it was one additional sentence.
A sentence that made his blood turn cold.
“The woman who speaks your silence will be the reason you hear nothing ever again.”
Salvatore crushed the phone in his hand.
Marco entered the room.
“What happened?”
Salvatore looked up.
For the first time in years...
Marco saw something terrifying.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Fear.
“Find who sent this.”
Marco nodded.
“How far do we go?”
Salvatore looked toward the window.
Toward the city.
Toward the enemies hiding in the shadows.
Then he signed one sentence.
“Burn everything until we find them.”
Meanwhile, Tessa sat alone in her apartment.
Dany was asleep in the next room.
The note from the Corvo was still on the table.
The warning.
The threat.
The fear.
But she looked at it differently now.
Because she finally understood something.
She wasn't afraid of Salvatore's world.
She was afraid of losing the people she loved.
And somewhere deep inside...
She knew she had already made her choice.
She wasn't running.
Not from Salvatore.
Not from the Corvo.
Not from anyone.
Because years ago, she learned something important.
Silence wasn't empty.
Silence could hold pain.
Silence could hold memories.
And sometimes...
Silence could hold love.
Across Chicago, inside a hidden underground room, Adrian Bellini watched the security footage of Tessa.
He smiled.
“She really is different.”
A man beside him asked:
“Do we remove her?”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked at the screen.
Because for the first time, Salvatore Marquetti had something worth protecting.
And that made him vulnerable.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“We don't kill the weakness.”
He leaned closer.
“We use it.”
The war had officially begun.
But nobody knew the most dangerous weapon in this war wasn't a gun.
It wasn't money.
It wasn't power.
It was a woman who refused to abandon the man everyone else had already given up on.
And Salvatore Marquetti was about to learn something he never expected.
May you like
The person who saved him...
Might be the same person who destroyed every wall he built around his heart.
