Chapter 3 – “The Trap That Turned Into a War”

The black crow symbol stared back at Salvatore Marquetti from the photograph placed on his desk.
For nine years, he had tried to forget it.
For nine years, he had buried the memories beneath money, power, and blood.
But some ghosts didn't disappear.
They waited.
They watched.
And they returned when you finally allowed yourself to care about something again.
Salvatore sat motionless in his office, his fingers resting against the edge of the paper.
Across from him stood Marco Bellini.
His most trusted lieutenant.
His oldest friend.
The one man who had been beside him through everything.
The one man who knew what Salvatore had lost.
Marco's expression was grim.
“You recognize it.”
It wasn't a question.
Salvatore looked up.
He nodded once.
Marco exhaled slowly.
“After all these years…”
He looked at the symbol.
“They're back.”
The room became heavy.
Salvatore closed his eyes for a moment.
And suddenly he wasn't in his office anymore.
He was twenty-four years old again.
Before the silence.
Before the scars.
Before the world became a place of shadows.
Nine years earlier.
The night had started like any other.
Salvatore Marquetti had been many things.
A son.
A brother.
A businessman.
A criminal.
But most importantly, he had been a man who believed he could control everything.
He was young.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
That was what everyone told him.
Until the explosion.
Until the car beneath him became a weapon.
Until fire consumed the night.
He remembered the feeling.
The heat.
The impact.
The screaming.
Then nothing.
When he woke up in the hospital, the world was different.
Doctors moved their mouths.
People cried.
Machines flashed.
But he heard nothing.
Not one sound.
The silence was terrifying.
But worse than losing his hearing...
Was learning who had betrayed him.
The explosion wasn't random.
Someone inside his organization had planned it.
Someone close.
Someone he trusted.
The black crow symbol had been left behind.
A warning.
A signature.
The symbol belonged to a criminal organization known only as:
The Corvo.
The Crow.
A group that had existed in Chicago's shadows for decades.
They didn't want money.
They wanted control.
And Salvatore had survived their attempt to erase him.
But the person who ordered the attack had disappeared.
Until now.
Salvatore opened his eyes.
“Tessa.”
Marco looked at him.
“You're thinking about her.”
Salvatore didn't deny it.
Marco walked closer.
“Boss, listen to me.”
Salvatore looked up.
“This isn't about some waitress anymore.”
A pause.
“The Corvo knows about her.”
That sentence changed everything.
Salvatore stood.
His movements were controlled.
But Marco saw it.
The anger.
The fear.
Both.
“What happened to her brother?”
Salvatore signed quickly.
Marco understood.
“We're still looking.”
Salvatore's jaw tightened.
Find him.
The words weren't spoken.
They didn't need to be.
Marco nodded.
“I already sent people.”
Meanwhile, Tessa sat on the floor of her apartment.
The note was still in her hand.
Her mind refused to accept what was happening.
Dany was missing.
Her little brother.
The boy she had protected her entire life.
The boy who used to follow her everywhere.
The boy who smiled even after the world became quiet.
Someone had taken him.
Because of her.
Because of Salvatore.
A knock came at the door.
Tessa froze.
Every instinct told her not to move.
The knock came again.
Slow.
Deliberate.
She reached for the kitchen knife on the counter.
Not because she thought it would protect her.
But because doing nothing felt worse.
The door opened.
“Tessa.”
She almost dropped the knife.
“Salvatore?”
He stood there.
Not alone.
Two men were behind him.
Security.
Protection.
She should have felt safer.
Instead, anger exploded inside her.
“You knew.”
Her voice shook.
Salvatore looked at her.
She signed:
“You knew this could happen.”
His expression changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
He answered:
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“My brother is gone.”
Her hands moved faster.
Emotion taking control.
“Because of you.”
The words hit harder than any weapon.
Salvatore didn't defend himself.
Didn't argue.
Because she was right.
His world had entered hers.
And now she was paying the price.
After a long moment, he signed:
“I will bring him back.”
Tessa stared.
“You don't understand.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He's all I have.”
Salvatore looked at her.
Then slowly signed:
“I know.”
Something in his expression broke.
Because he did know.
More than anyone.
He knew what it felt like to lose family.
To have someone taken away.
To live with an empty space that never healed.
Tessa looked away.
She hated that she believed him.
She hated that the dangerous man in front of her was the only person who might save Dany.
An hour later, Salvatore brought Tessa to his private headquarters.
The building was hidden behind a normal-looking office tower downtown.
But inside was another world.
Security.
Technology.
People who moved like soldiers.
Everyone stopped when Tessa entered.
Not because she was important.
Because she was with him.
Salvatore led her into a conference room.
A screen displayed a picture.
Dany.
Her breath caught.
“He's alive.”
The words escaped her.
Salvatore nodded.
The image showed Dany sitting in a room.
Scared.
But alive.
Tessa covered her mouth.
A wave of relief crashed over her.
Then she noticed something.
A man standing behind Dany.
His face hidden.
But the tattoo on his hand was visible.
A black crow.
Her stomach dropped.
“The same symbol.”
Salvatore nodded.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“Who are they?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Marco spoke.
“The people who tried to kill Salvatore nine years ago.”
Tessa turned.
Her eyes widened.
“You mean…”
Marco nodded.
“They're back.”
The plan was simple.
Too simple.
Which meant it was probably dangerous.
The Corvo contacted Salvatore that evening.
They wanted an exchange.
Dany for something they claimed Salvatore stole from them years ago.
A file.
A secret.
Something that could destroy powerful people.
Salvatore refused to explain.
Tessa noticed.
“You're hiding something.”
He looked at her.
She signed:
“Everyone hides things from me.”
That hurt.
Because he realized she was right.
People had spent her entire life deciding what she could handle.
But Tessa wasn't fragile.
She had survived more than most people ever knew.
Salvatore slowly signed:
“The file contains information about the people who control this city.”
She frowned.
“Politicians?”
He nodded.
“Judges.”
Another pause.
“Police.”
Tessa understood.
The Corvo didn't just want revenge.
They wanted power.
And Dany was just a piece on the board.
The exchange happened at an abandoned warehouse near the river.
Rain poured from the sky.
Tessa stood beside Salvatore.
She hated being there.
But she refused to stay behind.
Not when Dany was inside.
Salvatore looked at her.
“You shouldn't be here.”
She looked at him.
“Neither should my brother.”
He had no answer.
Because she was right.
The warehouse doors opened.
A man stepped out.
Tall.
Thin.
Smiling.
Unlike Salvatore, whose presence was controlled and cold...
This man felt unstable.
Dangerous.
“Salvatore Marquetti.”
The man's voice echoed.
“You look different.”
Salvatore stared.
Then his eyes narrowed.
Because he recognized him.
“Adrian.”
The name meant something.
Something bad.
Tessa looked between them.
Who was he?
The man smiled.
“You still remember me.”
Salvatore's hands tightened.
Adrian laughed.
“Of course you do.”
He looked at Tessa.
“And this must be the woman who taught the great Salvatore how to feel again.”
Tessa froze.
Salvatore stepped forward.
Danger radiated from him.
But Adrian only smiled.
“You always had one weakness.”
He pointed at Tessa.
“You care.”
The exchange began.
The file was handed over.
Dany was brought out.
Tessa almost ran toward him.
But then—
A gunshot.
Everything changed.
People screamed.
Lights went out.
The warehouse exploded into chaos.
Salvatore grabbed Tessa and pulled her behind cover.
Bullets hit the walls.
Men shouted.
The Corvo had betrayed their own agreement.
Of course they had.
People like them didn't make deals.
They made traps.
Tessa looked toward Dany.
He was still trapped on the other side.
“I have to get him!”
Salvatore grabbed her arm.
“No.”
She looked at him.
Her eyes were furious.
“He is my brother!”
Salvatore stared at her.
Then released her.
Because he understood.
Love made people do impossible things.
And maybe that was why he had spent years avoiding it.
Because love was the one thing more powerful than fear.
Salvatore moved through the warehouse like a storm.
The man everyone feared returned.
Not the broken man.
Not the lonely man.
The old Salvatore.
The warrior.
Within minutes, his men controlled the situation.
Adrian escaped.
But Dany was safe.
Tessa ran to him.
She dropped to her knees.
Dany immediately hugged her.
She cried.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
She cried like someone who had been holding everything inside for too long.
Salvatore watched from a distance.
And something inside him changed.
Because he had seen violence.
He had seen death.
He had seen people beg for their lives.
But watching Tessa hold her brother...
That was the first time in years he saw something stronger than power.
Love.
Later that night, after Dany was asleep at the safe house, Tessa found Salvatore standing alone on the balcony.
The city lights reflected in his eyes.
She approached.
“You saved him.”
He looked at her.
She signed:
“Thank you.”
He shook his head.
“I brought danger to you.”
She looked down.
Then signed:
“But you also brought him back.”
A long silence.
Then Salvatore said something unexpected.
He lifted his hands.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“I was afraid.”
Tessa froze.
Because Salvatore Marquetti admitting fear felt impossible.
She waited.
He continued.
“When I saw that note…”
His fingers stopped.
Then:
“I thought I would lose someone again.”
Tessa's heart tightened.
Someone.
Not something.
Someone.
He meant her.
She looked at him.
And for the first time...
She saw the truth.
The mafia boss wasn't afraid of death.
He was afraid of losing another person he cared about.
Tessa stepped closer.
She signed softly:
“You don't have to be alone anymore.”
Salvatore stared at her.
The rain fell around them.
The city moved below.
And for one impossible moment...
The most feared man in Chicago looked like someone who had finally found home.
But neither of them noticed the figure watching from across the street.
Adrian Bellini stood in the shadows.
Smiling.
Because the trap had worked.
Not the way he planned.
But better.
Because Salvatore Marquetti had a weakness now.
May you like
A real one.
And her name was Tessa Whitlock.
