Chapter 8 - The Hospital Siege

The blizzard was reaching its peak as Elena’s unmarked Chevrolet Tahoe skidded into the emergency parking lot of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The three-story medical complex stood against the dark sky like a beacon of light, but the usual peaceful calm of the facility was shattered. Two sleek black SUVs with tinted windows were parked sideways across the emergency bay, blocking the ambulance doors.

Inside the glass lobby, three men in dark suits stood near the security desk, speaking aggressively to a frightened nurse while a senior hospital administrator nervously reviewed a stack of legal papers.

I threw the Tahoe’s door open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop.

"Daniel, wait for backup!" Elena yelled, reaching for her door handle. "State police units are two minutes away!"

"My son is on the third floor," I said, not slowing down for a fraction of a second as I marched through the sliding glass doors into the warm, sterile air of the lobby.

The lead suit—a sharp-featured corporate attorney holding a leather briefcase—turned around as the heavy glass doors clicked shut behind me. He recognized me instantly from my family’s legal filings.

"Mr. Vance," the attorney said smoothly, holding up a manicured hand. "My name is Harrison Sterling. I am the chief legal counsel for Vance International. I suggest you stay calm. We are currently executing a legally binding temporary custody transfer order issued by the Blackwood County Family Court—"

I didn't let him finish the sentence.

I stepped into his space, grabbed him by his silk tie, yanked him down, and slammed his face hard against the edge of the marble security desk. His nose snapped with a sickening crunch, and he slumped to the floor, his leather briefcase popping open, scattering legal papers across the linoleum.

The two security guards standing beside him reached under their jackets for concealed weapons.

Behind me, Elena and her two CID agents stepped through the doors, pistols drawn and raised.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!" Elena screamed.

The two guards froze, their hands hovering near their belts, before slowly raising their hands in the air as state police officers slammed through the side entrances, their weapons trained on the lobby.

I didn't stay to watch them get handcuffed.

I vaulted over the security desk, took the stairs four at a time, and burst onto the third-floor Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The hallway was quiet, save for the steady, rhythmic hum of heart monitors and incubators. At the far end of the hall, standing outside Isolation Room 304, was Master Sergeant Miller—the female CID agent Elena had dispatched earlier to guard my son.

She had her hand on her sidearm, standing nose-to-nose with a woman in a tailored business suit who was holding an official county child protective services badge.

"Daniel!" Agent Miller called out as she saw me approaching. "This representative showed up five minutes ago with a court order claiming the child was being placed into emergency state custody due to your pending CID investigation."

I walked up to the CPS representative, took the laminated court order from her hands, and looked at the judge's signature at the bottom.

It was signed by Judge Richard Vance—my father’s cousin, a judge who had been on my family’s corporate payroll for twenty years.

I ripped the paper in half, then tore it again, letting the white scraps fall to the floor like snow.

"The judge who signed that order is currently being named as a co-conspirator in an international racketeering and treason indictment," I told her, my voice flat and cold. "If you take one more step toward that door, I will have you arrested for federal obstruction of justice."

The woman looked at the ripped paper on the floor, then at my eyes, swallowed hard, turned on her heel, and walked briskly down the hall toward the elevators.

I turned the door handle of Room 304 and stepped inside.
