Chapter 3 - The Sealed Room

"Step away from the crib!" I roared, my voice carrying the thunderous authority of a breaching squad leader.
The nurse jumped, her face draining of color as she dropped the syringe onto the carpet. It landed with a soft thud, the glass remaining miraculously intact. She backed away toward the curtained window, her hands raised, trembling violently.
"I... I was just administering his vitamin K shot!" she stammered, her eyes darting toward the door behind me. "Mrs. Vance hired me! I'm a private private duty nurse!"
I didn't waste breath arguing. I closed the distance between us in two long strides, grabbed her by the shoulder of her uniform, pulled her away from the crib, and shoved her through the doorway into the hallway, slamming the heavy oak door behind her and turning the brass lock.
I turned to the crib.
My son—barely six hours old—was wrapped in a coarse, oversized blanket that looked like it had been pulled from an old guest room trunk. His skin was mottled pink and pale blue, his tiny fists flailing blindly against the cold mountain air.
I reached down, my hands—hands that had carried rifles, broken doors, and dragged wounded soldiers through burning mud—shaking so badly I could barely unswaddle him.
"Hey," I whispered, my voice breaking for the first time since I’d stepped off the military transport plane four hours ago. "Hey, little guy. I'm here. Daddy's here."
I gently scooped his tiny, weightless body against my chest, pulling him under my tactical jacket to share my body heat. He instantly pressed his wet cheek against my collarbone, his desperate cries settling into small, hitching gasps.
On the nightstand beside the crib lay a folded piece of heavy parchment paper, half-hidden beneath an overturned box of sterile wipes. It bore the gold-embossed crest of the Vance Estate—my family's private legal stationery.
Holding my son securely against my heart with my left arm, I picked up the paper with my right hand and unfolded it.
It was an unfiled, pre-drafted Surrender of Parental Rights and Guardianship Agreement, naming Victoria Vance and Caleb Vance as the sole legal guardians of the child upon the event of my death or incapacitation overseas.
At the bottom of the page was Emily's signature.
Except it wasn't Emily's signature.
I knew my wife's handwriting down to the specific flourish she used on the crossbar of her E's. This signature was shaky, forced, and the stroke order was entirely wrong. Above the signature line were two faint, smeared drops of dried blood.
They hadn't just watched her die. They had been trying to force her to sign away our child while she was dying.
Downstairs, the heavy blast of multiple sirens cut through the roar of the blizzard outside. Tires screeched over the gravel driveway, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thuds of tactical boots mounting the front porch.

"CID! OPEN THE DOOR!" Elena’s voice echoed through the house, amplified by a bullhorn.
I tucked the legal paper into my inner jacket pocket, wrapped my coat tighter around my newborn son, unlocked the nursery door, and stepped back out into the hallway to face the truth of what my family had done.
