Chapter 5 - The Financial Trail

By 4:00 AM, the blizzard outside had turned Blackwood Pines into an isolated white island.
The estate was fully cordoned off with yellow police tape. Victoria and Caleb had been loaded into separate transport vans to be processed at the county jail, charged provisionally with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice.
I sat in my father’s former study—a room lined with leather-bound books and dark walnut paneling that smelled of old tobacco and expensive bourbon. Elena sat across from me at the massive executive desk, her laptop connected to a secure satellite uplink terminal she had set up on the coffee table.
"We got past the first layer of the drive," Elena said, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "Emily wasn't just a marathon runner, Daniel. She was an auditor for the State Department’s Inspector General's office. She took that job six months ago while you were deployed."
I looked up from my hands. "She never told me. She said she was working in municipal archiving."
"She was keeping you safe," Elena said quietly, turning the laptop screen toward me. "Look at this."
The screen displayed a massive spreadsheet containing thousands of line items, international wire transfers, shell company registrations, and shipping manifests stretching back over six years.
"Your family’s real estate company, Vance International Holdings, hasn't been making its money from luxury housing developments," Elena explained. "They’ve been acting as a blind financial laundering conduit for illegal arms shipments passing through Eastern Europe into active war zones. They were using your deployment status, your security clearances, and your military power of attorney to sign off on shell-company logistics contracts without your knowledge."
The room seemed to spin slightly.
"They used my name?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"They forged your signature on four international maritime transport deeds," Elena confirmed, her eyes filled with furious sympathy. "Emily discovered the discrepancies three weeks ago while reviewing regional tax filings. She realized that if these contracts were exposed, you would be court-martialed and sentenced to life in a military prison for treason."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying, flawless precision.
Emily hadn't been trapped in this house because of a sudden blizzard. She had come here to confront Victoria and Caleb with the evidence, intending to force them to sign a full confession that cleared my name before I returned from deployment.
"She was trying to save me," I said, pressing my palms against my face as tears finally burned hot against my eyelids. "She came here alone to protect my honor."
"And when she went into labor early," Elena added softly, "they saw an opportunity to let her die, take the baby, forge a parental surrender document, and use the child as leverage against you if you ever started asking questions about the company’s finances."
Suddenly, the satellite terminal on the desk let out a sharp, high-pitched double beep.
Elena leaned forward, her brow furrowing as a red warning banner flashed across her screen.
"What is it?" I asked, stepping behind her chair.
"Someone just initiated a remote wipe command on the drive's cloud backup server," Elena said, her hands moving frantically across the keys as she attempted to block the incoming signal. "It’s not coming from the local police station or the state house. The wipe command was authorized from a high-level IP address inside the Department of Defense."
"Someone high up is trying to protect the supply line," I said.
May you like
"Daniel," Elena looked up at me, her face pale. "The wipe command isn't just erasing data. It just triggered an automated security alert to the local precinct. A team of 'special contractors' was dispatched ten minutes ago to secure this estate and clear all physical evidence."
Outside the study window, the low, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of heavy helicopter rotors cut through the roar of the storm.
