Chapter 6 - The Pitiful Plea

A month after the triplets were born, the nursery at the Vale townhouse was filled with the soft sounds of white-noise machines and gentle breathing. Three cribs stood side by side, lined with soft organic cotton.
Elena sat in a plush rocking chair, holding baby Clara against her shoulder while nursing staff moved quietly in the adjoining room. She looked healthy now—color had returned to her cheeks, and her posture was strong, rooted in an unshakable sense of maternal responsibility.
Her phone rang on the side table. The caller ID displayed an unknown local number.
Elena answered, placing it on speaker. "Hello?"
"Elena... please. Don't hang up."
It was Daniel. His voice sounded cracked, raspy, completely stripped of the booming arrogance that had characterized him for years.
"You shouldn't be calling this number, Daniel," Elena said coolly, keeping her voice low so as not to wake Clara. "My legal team made it clear that all communication must go through Marcus Vance."
"Elena, please, I’m begging you!" Daniel choked out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "They’re going to indict me! The DA’s office sent a formal notice today! Grand larceny and corporate embezzlement! Elena, I could go to prison for ten years!"
"You committed crimes, Daniel," Elena replied steadily. "Actions have consequences. That was a rule you used to recite to me whenever you criticized my choices."
"I made a mistake!" Daniel cried out. "I was blind, I was stupid! Celeste manipulated me, Elena! She lured me into those deals, she pushed me to move the funds! I didn't want to leave you at the hospital—she forced me to turn off my phone!"
Elena almost laughed at the absurd, cowardice of his words. "Celeste didn't put her finger on your power button, Daniel. You did. You looked at a woman who was bleeding out while carrying your children, decided she was inconvenient, and went to eat cake."
"I was wrong!" Daniel sobbed openly over the line. "I hate myself every single second of the day! I can't sleep, I can't eat! I’m living in a disgusting room in Queens, Elena! My cards don't work! My friends won't answer my texts! I have nothing left!"
"You had a family, Daniel," Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, deadly calm. "You had a wife who loved you, who supported your career, who gave up her own professional aspirations to ensure your comfort. You had three children who almost died before they ever took their first breath. You discarded all of us because you thought Celeste Arden’s world was brighter."
"Please, Elena... for the babies," Daniel pleaded, sounding entirely broken. "Let me come home. Let me see them. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll work as a clerk in your company. I’ll do anything! Just don't let them send me to prison!"
"You will never see these children, Daniel," Elena said, her words striking him like iron hammers. "I have already filed for full legal and physical custody, terminating your parental rights based on severe abandonment and financial endangerment. And as for prison... you built that cell yourself, stone by stone, every time you transferred company money to your mistress."
"Elena—!"
"Goodbye, Daniel."
She disconnected the call and immediately blocked the number. She looked down at Clara, who stirred slightly in her arms, opening her tiny blue eyes to look up at her mother.
Elena smiled, leaning down to kiss the infant’s warm cheek. "You are safe," she whispered. "All of you are safe."
The next morning, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office officially unsealed a twelve-count indictment against Daniel Vale and Celeste Arden. News crews gathered outside the criminal court building as Daniel was led inside in handcuffs, wearing a rumpled suit, his face pale and sunken as flashbulbs burst around him.
