Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

By nightfall, news of the shakeup at Vale Meridian Holdings hit the financial press. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg both released breaking alerts: DANIEL VALE REMOVED AS CEO OF VALE MERIDIAN; HEIR ELENA VALE ASSUMES CONTROL MIDST FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Inside Celeste Arden’s luxury penthouse in Soho, the air was thick with tension. Silk pillows were tossed onto the floor, and empty wine glasses littered the marble kitchen island.

Daniel sat on the sofa, clutching his head in his hands, while Celeste paced back and forth across the rug, her phone pressed to her ear.

"What do you mean the wire was canceled?" Celeste screamed into the phone. "That money was already allocated for the gallery lease! You can't just void a contract!"

She slammed the phone down and whirled around to face Daniel. "They’ve frozen my personal accounts too, Daniel! The bank says my foundation’s tax-exempt status is under review because of 'suspicious corporate transfers'! Do you realize what this means? My reputation is ruined!"

"Will you stop screaming about your damn gallery?" Daniel shouted back, looking up with dark circles beneath his eyes. "I’ve been evicted from my own home! My corporate cards are dead! The board of directors refused to even take my calls today!"

"Because you were stupid enough to leave a paper trail!" Celeste hissed, dropping into an armchair across from him. "You swore to me that your wife was a clueless pushover who signed whatever you put in front of her! You told me she didn't care about the business!"

"She didn't!" Daniel yelled. "She was just an accountant! She spent all her time arranging dinner parties and decorating the nursery! I don't know who trained her to do this!"

"Her grandfather was Arthur Vale, you idiot!" Celeste spat out, her voice dripping with venom. "He was one of the most ruthless private equity titans in North America! Did you honestly think his only granddaughter didn't inherit any of his blood?"

Daniel squeezed his eyes shut. Memories of Arthur Vale flashed through his mind—the stern old man who had sat across from him at their wedding, staring at him with cold, calculating eyes, saying only five words: Look after her, or else.

At that moment, Daniel’s personal phone buzzed. It was a text from his primary defense attorney, Richard Sterling.

Daniel, do not attempt to contact Elena or any corporate officers. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has just issued a subpoena for Vale Meridian’s offshore transaction logs from 2024 to present. We need to talk immediately.

Daniel’s phone nearly slipped from his numb fingers. Grand larceny. Corporate fraud. Wire fraud. If Elena pressed the charges through to the end, he wasn't just broke—he was going to prison.

"Celeste," Daniel said, his voice shaking. "We need to sell your diamond collection. We need liquid cash for legal retainers."

Celeste stepped back, a look of pure disgust crossing her face. "My diamond collection? Are you insane? Those were gifts to me!"

"Gifts bought with stolen corporate funds!" Daniel shouted, standing up. "If I go down, Celeste, you go down with me! Every single transfer to your foundation has my signature and your bank account details on it!"

Celeste stared at him, her eyes cold and distant. In that single moment, any illusion of romantic devotion shattered completely. They were two opportunists who had preyed on what they believed was a weak, timid woman, only to realize they had been stepping on a landmine all along.

"Get out of my apartment, Daniel," Celeste said quietly.

"What?"

"Get out," she repeated, walking over to the door and pulling it open. "I have my own legal team to consult. And right now, being seen with you is financial suicide."

May you like

Daniel stood frozen, looking at the woman he had turned off his phone for four days ago while his children were being pulled from his wife's dying womb.

Without another word, he pulled his coat over his shoulders and stepped out into the rainy Manhattan night, completely alone.
