Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Marissa

With Blake officially removed from the company and held in federal custody under a two-million-dollar bail, the corporate rebuilding process began immediately. I took my place as the active Executive Chairwoman of Alden Biotech, working fourteen-hour days alongside Evelyn Reed to clean out the corruption Blake had left behind.
However, the nightmare was far from over.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while I was reviewing the financial restructuring reports in my father's old office, Evelyn walked in with a dark, troubled expression on her face.
"Grace," Evelyn said softly, closing the door behind her. "We have a problem."
I set my tablet down, looking up. "What is it? Did Blake manage to post bail?"
"No," Evelyn said, taking a seat opposite my desk. "Blake is still locked up in the county detention center. But Marissa Vance-Cross just held a live national television press conference outside the state courthouse."
My blood ran cold. "A press conference? About what?"
Evelyn pulled out her phone and played a news clip on the desk.
On the screen, Marissa stood behind a podium surrounded by her high-powered defense team. She was wearing a modest grey dress, carrying a pair of reading glasses, looking frail, pale, and deeply victimized. Tears welled in her eyes as she spoke into a cluster of news microphones.
"I am speaking out today as a victim of systematic corporate cruelty," Marissa sobbed into the microphones. "For eleven years, I was in a loving, committed relationship with Blake Alden. I had no idea he was married when we first met. He told me his home life was a sham, that his wife was abusive and emotionally distant. But more importantly, I am a terminally ill patient suffering from stage-four pulmonary fibrosis."
She dabbed at her eyes with a silk handkerchief.
"Arthur Alden created a specialized respiratory compound before he died. Blake assured me that this compound was meant for general public distribution. I had no idea that Grace Alden was hoarding this life-saving medicine exclusively for her family while letting other dying patients suffer. I am filing a fifty-million-dollar civil rights lawsuit against Alden Biotech and Grace Alden personally for medical negligence and denial of life-saving treatment!"
I stared at the video in utter disbelief.
"She's spinning the narrative," I gasped, my anger rising like a tidal wave. "She's trying to make herself look like a dying victim while turning the public against me! She's claiming I'm a greedy heiress hoarding medicine!"
"It gets worse," Evelyn said grimly. "The media is eating it up. #GraceAldenHoarder is currently trending on social media. Protesters are beginning to gather outside the main entrance of our corporate building down on the street."
I stood up, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window of my office, and looked down. Sure enough, a crowd of fifty people carrying printed signs and news cameras had gathered near the front fountain, shouting and waving placards that read: RELEASE THE MEDICINE! SAVING LIVES IS NOT A MONOPOLY!
"She thinks she can intimidate me into giving her the compound," I said, my jaw tightening. "She knows her illegal clinic lost its supply when Blake was arrested, and now she's trying to use public pressure to force my hand."
"We can issue a corporate press release explaining the legal reality," Evelyn suggested. "Explain that the compound is an experimental, unapproved orphan drug under strict FDA restricted trial protocols."
"No," I said, turning around to face Evelyn, a sharp, brilliant strategy forming in my mind. "A written press release won't work. The public doesn't read legal disclaimers. They want emotion. They want the truth."
"What are you planning, Grace?" Evelyn asked, her eyes narrowing with curiosity.
"Call a live international press conference in our main auditorium for four o'clock today," I said, my voice filled with unbreakable resolve. "Invite every major news network, every medical journalist, and specifically invite Marissa Vance-Cross and her legal team to sit in the front row."

"Grace, that's dangerous," Evelyn warned. "They will ambush you."
"Let them try," I smiled, a cold, dangerous edge to my voice. "It's time the world finds out what Marissa Vance-Cross really is."
