Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Black Envelope

Franklin’s thick fingers tapped against the heavy stock of the black envelope. The smug look on his face didn't vanish immediately; it decayed slowly, turning into a look of irritated confusion. He looked around the table at Colton and Derek, expecting them to crack another joke, but both brothers had gone strangely quiet. The cold weight of Maris’s gaze was doing something to the air in the backyard.

"Open it, Dad," Maris said softly, her hands folded neatly in front of her tailored navy suit. "I wouldn't want to ruin your appetite, but some things are best served while the grill is still hot."

Franklin scoffed, tearing the top of the envelope with a rough, impatient flick of his thumb. He pulled out a stack of crisp, official documents bearing the gold seal of the Idaho State Treasury and a prominent law firm's letterhead.

As his eyes scanned the first page, the color drained from his face so fast it looked like a magic trick. The beer bottle in his left hand tipped slightly, spilling amber liquid onto his plate of ribs, but he didn't even notice.

"What is this?" Franklin muttered, his voice losing its booming authority. "This is nonsense. This is a mistake."

"What's it say, Dad?" Colton asked, leaning over, his smugness replaced by sudden anxiety.

Franklin didn't answer. His eyes were wide, darting across the fine print.

"It's a foreclosure and acquisition notice," Maris answered for him, her voice ringing clearly across the silent lawn. "Specifically, it states that Camden Logistics—the company you, Colton, and Derek have been running into the ground for the past three years—has just been purchased. The primary debt holder sold your bad loans to a private equity firm called Alhena Holdings."

She stepped a bit closer, leaning slightly over the table.

"I am the majority shareholder of Alhena Holdings, Dad. I don't just own your company's debt anymore. As of 8:00 AM yesterday morning, I own the land we are standing on. I own the house behind you. And that black Jaguar out there? It's not mine. It belongs to the corporate fleet. I brought it here because the keys to your old truck are currently sitting on my desk, ready to be repossessed."

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered relatives. Her mother dropped the dish towel, her hands flying to her mouth.
