Chapter 5 - The Snake's Nest

The bankruptcy auction of Vance & Co. Luxury Imports was held on a rainy Thursday morning in a drab commercial warehouse downtown. I stood at the back of the room, sipping a warm tea, watching the contents of Natalie’s beloved boutique—the costly Italian silk dresses, the French leather bags, the crystal display cases—get sold off to the highest bidders for pennies on the dollar.

Natalie sat in the front row, sobbing uncontrollably into a tissue as the auctioneer’s gavel banged repeatedly, stripping away the lifestyle she had stolen my money to maintain.

When the auction ended, Victoria stood up, spotting me in the back. She marched over, her eyes wild with a desperation that had finally replaced her arrogance.

"Are you happy now, Claire?" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling. "Natalie's business is gone. Our family name is ruined in every social circle in Denver. We had to lease a tiny two-bedroom apartment in the slums because all our accounts are frozen. We can't even afford Ethan’s legal defense fund! You’ve taken everything from us!"

"I haven't taken anything from you, Victoria," I said, my voice completely calm, completely even. "You took from yourselves the moment you decided that my hard work belonged to you. You sat at my table, eating food I paid for, in a house I built, and joked about your son breaking my bones. You didn't view me as a human being. You viewed me as a resource."

"It was just a marital dispute!" Natalie cried, running over to join her mother. "People get angry! Ethan made a mistake, but you’re destroying our lives permanently!"

"Ethan didn't make a mistake, Natalie. He committed a felony," I replied, looking down at her. "And as for your boutique? The forensic audit completed yesterday shows that you were fully aware the eighty thousand dollars Ethan tried to transfer was stolen from my corporate consulting account. In fact, you signed the deposit slips for the previous three fraudulent transfers."

Natalie froze, her face turning completely white.

"What... what are you talking about?" she whispered.

Arthur Pendelton stepped out from behind me, holding a fresh legal envelope. He handed it directly to Natalie. "Natalie Vance, you have been formally named as a co-conspirator in a federal indictment for grand larceny, bank fraud, and receiving stolen property. Federal marshals will be arriving at your new apartment within twenty-four hours to process your arrest."

Victoria let out a strangled shriek, catching her daughter as Natalie’s legs buckled beneath her. They looked up at me, no longer like the proud, untouchable aristocrats of the Cherry Hills estate, but like exactly what they were—criminals caught in a web of their own making.

"I told you both at dinner," I said quietly, turning my back on them. "To ownership. I own my life now. And you own the consequences."
