Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

By Monday morning, the lobby of the Denver County Courthouse was swarming with local media. News of the high-profile arrest of Ethan Vance—a prominent corporate consultant married to the former head of commercial fraud for a major national bank—had leaked to the press.

I arrived wearing a tailored navy suit jacket draped elegantly over my right shoulder to accommodate the bulky arm sling. My hair was pulled back neatly, exposing the slight bruising near my jawline that the doctors had documented. Arthur walked beside me, his presence an unyielding shield against the flashing cameras.

Across the hallway, Victoria and Natalie sat on a bench, surrounded by a team of expensive, slick-talking defense lawyers led by Harrison Vance—Ethan’s uncle, a notorious white-collar defender who prided himself on getting wealthy criminals off on technicalities.

Victoria stood up the moment she saw me, her face contorted with aristocratic rage. "You ungrateful, calculating snake!" she screamed, ignoring her lawyers' frantic attempts to hold her back. "You ruined my son's career! You set him up because you couldn't control him! Harrison is going to destroy you on that stand!"

I didn't even look at her. I walked past her as if she were made of glass, entering the secure courtroom where the arraignment was about to begin.

When Ethan was led out of the holding cell, he looked completely unrecognizable. The expensive silk suit was gone, replaced by a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. His hair was greasy, his posture slouched, and the smug, relaxed confidence he had displayed at the dinner table had been entirely replaced by a desperate, panicked terror.

Harrison Vance stepped to the podium, his voice booming through the courtroom. "Your Honor, my client is a respected member of the community with zero criminal history. The allegations brought by his wife are a malicious exaggeration born out of a bitter marital dispute over finances. The injury to her arm was an unfortunate accident that occurred during a mutual struggle over a personal cell phone. We ask for immediate release on personal recognizance."

The prosecutor stood up, calmly plugging a flash drive into the courtroom’s audio system. "Your Honor, the state wishes to present a forty-second audio clip recorded less than forty-eight hours ago inside the defendant’s family home."

The judge nodded, and the audio began to play through the courtroom speakers.

“My son taught her a lesson,” Victoria’s recorded voice echoed, crystal clear, sharp, and terrifyingly cold.

“She thought she was in charge,” Natalie’s laughter followed.

Then, Ethan’s own calm, arrogant voice filled the room: “Maybe now, you’ll stop interfering in family decisions.”

The entire courtroom went dead silent. Harrison Vance’s mouth opened slightly, his legal argument instantly turning to ash. Ethan’s head dropped into his hands, his shoulders shaking as he realized his family's own arrogance had just sealed his fate.

The judge looked down over her glasses, her expression filled with absolute disgust. "Bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars, cash only. The defendant will surrender his passport immediately, and a permanent, non-expiring protective order is issued for the victim. Mr. Vance, you are going to stay exactly where you are."
