Chapter 3 - Forensic Extraction

The luxury interior of my home, once a sanctuary, now felt like a crime scene. By midnight, Ethan had been processed into the county jail, and Victoria and Natalie had been escorted off the property by private security, carrying nothing but a few designer suitcases and their shattered pride.
I sat at my kitchen island, a fresh ice pack resting against my throbbing shoulder. Clara Hastings sat across from me, her laptop open, strings of green and red financial data illuminating her focused expression.
"Claire, it’s worse than we thought," Clara said, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Ethan didn't just try to transfer that eighty thousand on Tuesday. He’s been systematically draining your joint household reserves for the last fourteen months. He created a series of shell companies under Natalie’s boutique's name—Vance & Co. Luxury Imports—and has been laundering your architectural consulting fees through them to pay off his mother’s personal gambling debts at the Black Hawk casinos."
A cold, dead calm washed over me. The physical pain in my arm was nothing compared to the deep, burning rage of betrayal. I had spent five years building a life with a man who looked at my intelligence and my hard work as nothing more than an open vault for his family's parasitic lifestyle.
"Can we trace the velocity of the funds?" I asked, my corporate fraud training kicking in.
"Yes," Clara nodded, turning the screen toward me. "Look at this ledger. He forged your digital signature on a power of attorney document three months ago. He was preparing to refinance this very house next week. If you hadn't stopped that transfer on Tuesday, he would have stripped the equity entirely, leaving you with a multi-million-dollar debt while transferring the deed into Victoria's name."
The door to the kitchen opened, and Arthur Pendelton walked in, holding a cup of coffee. His expression was grim but entirely controlled. "The judge just denied Ethan’s initial bail request, Claire. Because of the severity of the spiral fracture in your arm, combined with the audio evidence of witness intimidation and the financial fraud documents we submitted, he’s being held under a domestic violence hold until the formal arraignment on Monday."
"What about Victoria and Natalie?" I asked.
"They're currently staying at a cheap motel near the highway," Arthur said with a hint of satisfaction. "Natalie's boutique was served with a bankruptcy seizure notice an hour ago. The wolves are at their door, Claire. But you need to be prepared. Victoria is already calling every high-profile defense attorney in the state. They are going to try to paint you as a vengeful, malicious executive who used her banking connections to frame her husband."

I looked down at my swollen, bandaged fingers. I remembered the terrifying sensation of being slammed into the banister, the sound of my own bone cracking, and the absolute certainty in Ethan's eyes that I would stay silent out of shame.
"Let them hire whoever they want, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "They think I'm playing a game of domestic chicken. They forget that before I married Ethan, I spent a decade putting corporate predators in federal cages. I don't frame people. I build ironclad cases. And I am going to bury them."
