Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED DYNASTY

By noon that day, the news of the raid on Vance Manor and the collapse of Vance Medical Supply had sent shockwaves through the regional business community and national media outlets.

I stood in the lobby of the Federal Courthouse downtown, surrounded by my husband, David, and our attorney, Clara’s former family lawyer whom we had hired to represent our civil interests.

The courtroom gallery upstairs was standing room only. Dozens of news cameras were lined up along the sidewalk outside, their satellite trucks clogging the street.

Through the heavy oak doors of the arraignment courtroom, three figures were led out in orange jumpsuits, heavy waist chains, and ankle shackles.

Arthur Vance walked with his head down, his face pale and sunken. Evelyn Vance was weeping quietly, hiding her face behind her cuffed hands to avoid the flashbulbs of the press photographers.

And then came Ryan.

He was wearing the same orange jumpsuit, his hands chained tightly to his waist. As he was led down the central aisle toward the holding cells, his eyes scanned the crowd and landed directly on me.

For a second, the old, arrogant flare returned to his eyes—a desperate attempt to assert dominance, to make me flinch the way I used to when we were children.

I didn't flinch.

I stood beside David, my posture straight, my chin lifted, my expression calm and unreadable. I looked at my brother not with anger, not with hatred, but with complete, absolute detachment.

Ryan’s eyes welled with fresh tears. He looked away first, his head dropping toward his chest as the guards pushed him through the heavy steel door of the holding block.

Federal Prosecutor Marcus Kane stepped up to the media podium in the courthouse rotunda, adjusting his microphone as dozens of reporters thrust their recorders forward.

"Good afternoon," Prosecutor Kane spoke, his voice echoing through the marble hall. "Earlier today, the United States District Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation, unsealed a twenty-four-count federal indictment against Arthur Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Ryan Vance."

The reporters scribbled furiously on their pads.

"The charges include multi-million-dollar federal health care fraud, racketeering, distribution of counterfeit medical devices to state trauma facilities, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering," Kane continued. "Furthermore, the State Attorney's Office has officially reinstated first-degree murder charges against Ryan Vance in connection with the three-year-old homicide of Clara Higgins, as well as attempted murder and felony child abuse charges in connection with last night's brutal attack on nine-year-old Eli Vance."

A wave of loud gasps swept through the press corps.

"Due to the severity of the charges, the flight risk, and the extensive history of witness intimidation," Kane concluded, "the federal magistrate has denied bail for all three defendants. They will remain in federal custody pending trial."

A reporter shouted from the front row: "Mr. Kane! How was this evidence uncovered after three years?"

Prosecutor Kane paused, looked over the heads of the reporters, and met my eyes across the rotunda.

"The evidence was preserved and brought forward by a courageous mother," Kane said clearly into the microphones. "A woman who refused to allow her family's wealth and influence to protect a predator any longer."

The reporters all turned around, their cameras spinning toward me, flashbulbs exploding like a thousand miniature suns.

David wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. We didn't answer any questions. We turned our backs on the press, walked down the grand marble steps of the courthouse, and stepped out into the clean, crisp afternoon air.
