Chapter 2 - THE HOSPITAL FORTRESS

Trauma Bay 2 at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was a stark, sterile universe of stainless steel, fluorescent lights, and the persistent chime of cardiac monitors.

The medical staff moved around Eli like a well-oiled machine. Dr. Aris, an experienced pediatric trauma specialist with silver hair and razor-sharp eyes, conducted the primary evaluation while two nurses started a second IV line and cut away Eli’s sweatpants to check for hidden trauma.

"Mother," Dr. Aris said, stepping back from the bed and drawing a privacy curtain around us while the radiologist prepared the portable CT scanner. "I need you to tell me exactly what happened."

I stood against the wall, clutching my ruined heels in my hand, my voice shaking as I recounted everything—finding Eli on the tile, my family’s calm indifference, Marshall’s revelation in the ambulance.

Dr. Aris listened without interrupting, his pen flying across his chart. When I finished, he looked up, his expression hardened into stone. "The CT scan will check for epidural hematomas or skull fractures. The bruising on his arms indicates he raised his hands to shield his face. The marks on his neck and jaw are consistent with manual strangulation and blunt force impact."

"Strangulation?" I choked out, covering my mouth.

"He was choked until he lost consciousness, Hannah," Dr. Aris said directly. "The loss of oxygen is why he collapsed at your door. He was trying to reach the exit before he went under. He is extremely lucky to be alive."

Before I could collapse under the crushing weight of that sentence, the door to the trauma bay opened. A tall woman in a dark charcoal suit stepped inside. She carried a thick leather briefcase and wore a gold badge pinned to her lapel: Special Investigator Rachel Vance—State Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

I flinched at the last name.

"No relation," she said immediately, her voice low, raspy, and thoroughly authoritative. "Mrs. Miller—or rather, Ms. Vance—I’m Investigator Rachel Vance. Marshall called my direct line from the road. I was the secondary agent assigned to Case 804 three years ago before it was buried."

I looked at her, searching her face for any sign of compromise, but her dark eyes were as cold and solid as granite.

"Is it true?" I asked. "Did my father buy off the police back then?"

"Your father paid two hundred thousand dollars to a former precinct captain who is currently serving a federal sentence for bribery in an unrelated case," Rachel said, opening her briefcase on a stainless-steel tray. "We knew Ryan killed Clara. We just couldn't prove it after the forensic samples disappeared. But tonight, your brother made a catastrophic mistake."

She pulled out a high-resolution digital camera and a voice recorder. "He thought your silence was guaranteed because you’re his sister. He thought your parents could control you the way they’ve controlled you your entire life."

"They can't," I said, stepping closer to Eli's bed. I touched his soft hair, brushing it away from his bruised forehead. "They never will again. I want him arrested. I want my parents arrested as accessories."

"That’s why I’m here," Rachel said. "We need to document every single millimeter of Eli’s injuries before the swelling changes. We need a formal recorded statement from you, and as soon as Eli is conscious and cleared by Dr. Aris, a pediatric forensic interviewer will speak with him."

"Where is Ryan right now?" I asked, a sudden cold spike of dread hitting my stomach. "Is Officer Miller holding him at my house?"

Rachel’s phone buzzed on her belt. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and her jaw tightened slightly. "Miller just reported in. When he attempted to detain Ryan in your driveway pending an investigative hold, your father’s legal counsel arrived with an emergency administrative order challenging the detention basis. Ryan left in your father’s Bentley twenty minutes ago."

"They let him go?!" I screamed, the silence of the hospital bay shattering. "He almost killed my son!"

"He isn't free, Hannah," Rachel said calmly, holding up a hand to quiet me. "He’s on a leash. I’ve already placed a regional border watch on his passport and dispatched two unmarked units to track your father’s vehicle. Ryan thinks he’s safe because he’s behind his father's lawyers. He doesn't know I just reopened Case 804 under federal homicide jurisdiction."

The heavy sliding glass doors of Trauma Bay 2 rattled. A hospital security guard knocked once and leaned his head in.

"Investigator Vance? There’s a gentleman in the main lobby demanding to see Ms. Hannah Vance. Says he’s her father, Arthur Vance. He’s got two private security guards with him and a firm legal team."

I grabbed the edge of Eli's gurney, my knuckles turning pure white.

Rachel picked up her leather briefcase, pulled a gold-plated pen from her pocket, and looked at the security guard. "Tell Mr. Vance that if he takes one step past the lobby intake desk, I will personally arrest him for felony obstruction of justice and interference with an active homicide investigation."

She turned to me, her eyes dead serious. "Stay in this room, Hannah. Lock the door from the inside. Don't open it for anyone except me or Dr. Aris."
