Chapter 7 - THE SIEGE OF VANCE MANOR

By eight o'clock that morning, the sky over the city was a dull, steel gray. A light snow had begun to fall, dusting the manicured lawns and stone gates of Vance Manor—my parents' sprawling five-acre estate in the city's most exclusive gated community.
I sat in the back of an armored FBI command vehicle parked two blocks away from the estate's main iron gates.
Special Investigator Rachel Vance was sitting across from me, flanked by Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Kane—a sharp, middle-aged federal prosecutor with graying temples and an unyielding demeanor. Outside the tinted windows of the command vehicle, twelve tactical vehicles carrying FBI SWAT teams and state troopers were silently staging along the quiet residential street.
"Ms. Vance," Prosecutor Kane said, reviewing the signed federal arrest warrants on his digital tablet. "The grand jury signed off on all counts thirty minutes ago. The evidence provided in Harold Vance’s ledger was ironclad. The paper trail links your father’s corporate accounts directly to the offshore dummy corporations controlled by Ryan."
"Have you tracked Ryan's location?" I asked.
"Our tactical teams have had Vance Manor under satellite surveillance for the last four hours," Rachel reported. "Your father’s Bentley is parked in the circular driveway. Thermal imaging indicates five individuals inside the main residence: Arthur, Evelyn, Ryan, and two private security personnel."
"They know it’s coming," I said, remembering my mother’s voice on the phone hours ago. "They think they can use their lawyers to delay the arrest until they can get Ryan to an airfield."
"They won't get ten feet off that property," Kane said firmly. "We’ve already grounded your father’s private jet at the regional airport, frozen all domestic and international bank accounts associated with Vance Medical Supply, and served seizure warrants on their corporate headquarters downtown."
Rachel looked at her tactical wristwatch. "It’s time. Hannah, you don't have to be here for this."
"I want to be here," I said, looking out at the falling snow. "I need to see it with my own eyes."
"Stay inside this command vehicle until the tactical unit clears the house," Rachel ordered gently, picking up her ballistic vest and pulling it over her suit jacket. "Once the scene is secured, you can step out."
I nodded.
The radios inside the command vehicle crackled to life with crisp, metallic orders: Alpha Team moving to front perimeter... Bravo Team securing rear exit... Execute in three... two... one...
The tactical vehicles launched forward in a deafening surge of engines.
The heavy iron gates of Vance Manor were blown off their hinges with a localized breaching charge, the explosive blast echoing through the quiet neighborhood like thunder. The armored trucks roared up the long asphalt driveway, surrounded by heavily armed federal agents in dark green tactical uniforms.
"FBI! Federal Search Warrant! Open the door!" a bullhorn echoed across the snow-covered lawn.
Through the live video feed streaming from the SWAT lead officer's helmet camera onto the command vehicle's monitors, I watched the front doors of my childhood home being smashed inward with a steel battering ram.
Flashbang grenades detonated inside the grand foyer with blinding white flashes and muffled booms.
Over the radio, screams of terror broke out—my mother’s voice, shrill and frantic, weeping as heavy tactical boots stomped across the pristine marble floors of her home.
"Contact! Down on the floor! Hands behind your back! Don't move!"
On the primary monitor, I saw my father, Arthur Vance. The powerful corporate titan who had spent his life controlling everyone around him was pinned face-down on his imported oriental rug, his wrists being snapped into black plastic zip-ties by two heavy SWAT operators.
Beside him, my mother was kneeling in her silk bathrobe, her manicured hands raised over her head, sobbing hysterically as an agent read her her Miranda rights from a laminated card.
"Hostile secured in the west wing!" a voice crackled through the speaker. "We have Ryan Vance in custody! He was attempting to exit through the rear patio!"
The camera angle shifted toward the glass patio doors.
Ryan was pinned against the snow-covered stone balustrade outside. His face was pressed hard against the icy stone, his designer jacket torn, his hair messy, and his eyes wide with wild, unadulterated terror. He was crying, screaming for his father’s lawyers, his body shaking uncontrollably in the freezing winter air.
The Golden Son. The untouchable predator.

Reduced to a sobbing coward on his parents' back porch.
I leaned back in the leather seat of the command vehicle and closed my eyes. A deep, heavy weight that I had carried on my shoulders since I was a little girl quietly slid off me and shattered onto the floor.
