Chapter 2 - Seconds from Zero

Inside Operating Room 4, the bright lights were blinding. Sarah fought to stay conscious as the anesthesia began to take hold. She could feel the tugging, the frantic movements of the surgeons, and the terrifying absence of a heartbeat sound from the fetal monitor.
"We're in," Dr. Aris announced, his scalpel moving with practiced precision. "Suction! There's too much blood. We need to get the infant out now."
Please, God, Sarah prayed silently in the dark recesses of her mind. Take me, but let my baby breathe. She remembered the blue folder filled with insurance denials, the bruises on her thighs from hormone injections, the quiet moments she and Mark shared dreaming of this exact month. It couldn't end on a cold steel table.
Suddenly, a sharp, wet sound broke the tension in the room. A faint, fragile cry echoed against the tiled walls.
"We have a boy," the neonatologist called out, immediately rushing the infant to the warming table. "He’s small, 34 weeks, and took in some fluid, but his heart rate is stabilizing. We need to intubate and move him to the NICU immediately."
Sarah let out a choked sob before the anesthesia completely pulled her under into a deep, dark sleep.
Downstairs in the hospital lobby, the confrontation escalated. Four police officers marched through the sliding glass doors, straight toward Arthur Harrison.
"Arthur Harrison?" the leading officer asked. "You are under arrest for domestic assault and felony reckless endangerment of an unborn child. Hands behind your back."
"Do you know who I am?" Arthur roared, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "I built this city’s infrastructure! Get your hands off me! Eleanor, call the mayor!"
May you like
"The mayor declined your call five minutes ago, Arthur," Julian Vance’s voice boomed across the lobby. The elderly billionaire and patriarch of the city's banking industry stepped forward, his eyes filled with immense scorn. "I made sure of it. I’ve tolerated your arrogance for decades, Arthur, because of your father. But watching you throw your heavily pregnant daughter down the stairs like garbage? You are a monster. And I will personally finance the prosecution."
As handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists, Eleanor began to scream, clutching Chloe, who was hyperventilating. Mark stood like a statue, watching his father-in-law being dragged away in shame. The war had just begun.
