Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The lead federal agent stepped onto the altar, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Arthur Bennett," the agent declared, his voice firm and cold. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud."
Arthur didn't even fight. As the metal cuffs clicked around his wrists, he collapsed to his knees on the white carpet, weeping pathetically in his white wedding tuxedo.
A second female officer stepped up the aisle, approaching Vanessa.
"Vanessa Cole," the officer said. "You are under arrest as a co-conspirator to grand larceny and money laundering."
"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking her heavy lace dress as the officer twisted her arms behind her back and snapped the handcuffs onto her wrists. "Arthur promised me everything! He told me he had the money! It’s all his fault!"
The guests watched in stunned silence as Arthur Bennett and Vanessa Cole were led down the white wedding aisle in chains, past the three hundred mourners who had come to celebrate their union, and pushed into the back of waiting police cruisers outside.
As the police cars drove away, their sirens wailing into the afternoon air, Thomas Sterling turned to me and handed me a final folder.
"It's over, Charles," Thomas said quietly. "The court has finalized the emergency guardianship order. You are the sole legal guardian of Lucy, Rachel, and April. The construction company, the family house, and all liquidated assets have been placed into an untouchable educational trust for the girls."
I looked down at my three granddaughters.
Lucy, Rachel, and April were standing close together, holding hands. The fear that had gripped their small shoulders at their mother's grave six days ago was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, beautiful sense of freedom.
Lucy looked up at me, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time since her mother had passed away.
"Grandpa?" she whispered.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Can we go home now?"
May you like
I reached down, taking April in my left arm, while wrapping my right arm around Lucy and Rachel.
"Yes, baby," I said, kissing the top of Lucy’s head. "Let's go home."
