Chapter 10 - A Garden of Roses

Three Years Later.
The warm Georgia sunshine filtered softly through the moss-draped oak trees in my backyard.
The old wooden house had been expanded to include a bright, sunlit study where twelve-year-old Rachel sat drawing at her easel, and a cozy reading nook where nine-year-old April sat playing with her puppy.
Out in the garden, fifteen-year-old Lucy stood near a massive bed of thriving white and pink rose bushes that we had planted together during our first spring. She was holding a pair of garden shears, carefully trimming the stems.
Lucy had grown into a tall, beautiful young woman—carrying her mother's sharp intelligence, her grandmother's warmth, and an unshakeable inner strength that no tragedy could ever break.
I sat on the porch swing, sipping a cup of fresh coffee, watching my granddaughters laugh and play under the afternoon sky.
Arthur Bennett was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal correctional facility in Georgia, while Vanessa was serving eight years for her role in the financial conspiracy. Neither of them had ever attempted to contact the girls again, and their names were never spoken in our home.
A gentle breeze blew across the yard, carrying the sweet, unmistakable scent of white roses.
Lucy stopped her trimming, looking up at the clear blue sky, a peaceful smile touching her lips. She reached into her pocket, pulling out the small purple velvet bag that she still kept on her nightstand every single night.
She held the bag against her chest for a moment, then looked over at me on the porch and waved.
I waved back, leaning back against the wooden swing, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle into my soul.

My daughter Rose was gone, but her love had built an unbreakable shield around her children. Her victory was complete, her legacy was secure, and her three sweet girls were home—safe, loved, and blooming like roses under the warm summer sun.
