Chapter 8 - The Sealed Envelope

Thomas Sterling stepped to the center of the pavilion, under the crystal chandelier. He broke the red wax seal on the thick white envelope and pulled out a stack of legal documents and a small, encrypted USB flash drive.
He held up the documents for the entire audience to see.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Thomas announced, his voice ringing like a bell through the silent hall. "My name is Thomas Sterling, legal counsel for the estate of the late Rose Miller-Bennett. Before her passing, Mrs. Bennett uncovering a massive, multi-million-dollar criminal conspiracy orchestrated by her husband, Arthur Bennett, and his fiancée, Vanessa Cole."
Vanessa’s bouquet of orchids slipped from her hands, crashing onto the white carpet. "That's a lie! He's making it up!"
"Is it, Vanessa?" Thomas asked, plugging the USB drive into the country club's audiovisual system using a laptop on the DJ’s table.
Behind the altar, a massive projection screen lowered from the ceiling—the screen that was supposed to show a romantic slideshow of Arthur and Vanessa’s relationship.
Instead, the screen flickered to life, displaying a series of high-resolution bank transfer documents, offshore account ledgers, and audio recordings.
The first document showed that Arthur had systematically stolen $1.4 million from his employees' pension fund, transferring the money directly into a private bank account in the Bahamas registered under Vanessa Cole’s maiden name.
The second document was an official indictment from the State Attorney General’s office, charging Arthur Bennett with grand larceny, tax fraud, and corporate embezzlement.
The crowd erupted into shocked whispers. Several prominent business owners in the audience stood up, shouting in anger as they realized their investments had been stolen.
"There's more," Thomas said, clicking to the next file.
A final audio recording began to play through the country club’s surround-sound speakers. It was a phone call recorded six weeks earlier between Arthur and Vanessa while Rose was lying in her hospital bed.
Arthur’s voice boomed through the speakers:
"The doctor said she has less than a month. Once she's gone, we file the insurance claim. I'll dump the kids off at state custody on Monday after the funeral so we don't have to pay for their school tuition."
Vanessa’s voice responded, cold and laughing:
"Good. I don't want those ugly little girls at our wedding anyway. Make sure you clear out Rose's jewelry box before her father gets his hands on it."
The recording ended.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Guests turned their heads away in utter disgust. Members of Arthur’s own family covered their faces in shame. Vanessa stood in the middle of the aisle, trembling, her expensive makeup running down her face as tears of humiliation spilled from her eyes.
Arthur looked around the room, realizing that every bridge had been burned, every lie exposed, and every shred of his dignity destroyed before the entire city.
He looked at me, his eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic panic.

"Charles..." Arthur whimpered, taking a step toward me. "Please... we can talk about this... I'm your son-in-law..."
"You are nothing to us," I said coldly.
