Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

As the afternoon sun began to dip toward the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange, gold, and deep magenta, the guests began to gather inside the dining room for a quiet family dinner.
There were no politicians present. No judges, no union bosses, no men with concealed weapons hovering in the shadows of the doorways.
There were only eight people at the long mahogany table: Lorenzo, Isabella, Grace, Emma, Sofia, Mateo, his wife Sarah, and young David Miller.
In the center of the table stood a beautiful birch wood cake stand holding a simple home-baked birthday cake decorated with white frosting and fresh strawberries.
Isabella stood on her chair, her eyes sparkling beneath the light of the chandelier—a chandelier that now cast a warm, safe, inviting glow over the people gathered beneath it.
"Make a wish, Isabella!" Emma called out from across the table, her hands clapping excitedly.
Isabella looked at her father, who was standing beside her chair, his hand resting gently over her shoulder.
"Do I have to keep it a secret, Papa?" Isabella asked softly.
"Only if you want to, my sweet girl," Lorenzo replied, kissing the crown of her head.
Isabella closed her eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and blew out the seven small candles standing on the cake.
The room filled with warm, joyful applause.
"What did you wish for?" Sofia asked with a smile, pouring glasses of sparkling apple cider for the children.
Isabella looked around the table—at her father, at her aunt, at Grace and Emma, and at the friends who had stood like an unyielding wall between her and the darkness of the world.
"I wished that every birthday could be just like this one," Isabella said clearly. "With no big boxes. Just us."

Lorenzo felt a sudden, profound warmth expand within his chest—a feeling so deep and absolute that it washed away the lingering memories of every cold night, every blood-stained alley, and every threat he had ever faced in the dark history of his family.
He reached down, lifting Isabella from her chair, holding her close against his heart as the family laughed and toasted to the future.
