Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

Six months later. Spring.
The grand Duca estate on Long Island had undergone a complete transformation.
The high stone walls and security gates remained, but the oppressive, brooding atmosphere of the mansion was gone. The heavy dark velvet drapes in the grand ballroom had been replaced with light, flowing linen that let the golden afternoon sunlight flood across the polished marble floors.
The estate’s vast gardens, once strictly manicured for formal political receptions, were now filled with flowering cherry blossoms, wild clover, and a massive custom wooden playground constructed by David Miller.
It was a bright Saturday afternoon.
The sound of children's laughter rang clearly across the wide lawn. Isabella and Emma were running through the grass, chasing a pair of golden retriever puppies that Lorenzo had adopted for Isabella’s seventh birthday.
On the sunlit stone terrace, a long wooden table was set with fresh fruit, lemonade, and light afternoon pastries.
Grace sat at the table, wearing a simple lavender dress, talking comfortably with Sofia about community programs for the new Saratoga Springs youth center. Grace had flourished over the past six months; the anxious, fearful look that had once defined her posture had completely vanished, replaced by an easy, dignified grace.
At the far end of the terrace, Lorenzo stood leaning against the stone balustrade, watching his daughter play.
Mateo walked up beside him, wearing casual clothes instead of his usual dark tactical suit. He handed Lorenzo a slim tablet folder.
"The final audit from the Federal District Attorney arrived this morning, boss," Mateo reported softly. "Every shipping asset, real estate holding, and commercial venture under the Duca name has been fully cleared. The federal oversight committee has officially dissolved their monitoring team."
Lorenzo didn't look at the screen. He kept his eyes fixed on Isabella, who had just fallen into the soft grass, giggling as the two puppies licked her face.
"And Domenico Moretti?" Lorenzo asked quietly.
"He was sentenced yesterday to thirty-five years at Florence ADX," Mateo replied. "His remaining lieutenants have all entered plea bargains. The Moretti name is history."
Lorenzo took a deep breath of the warm, blossom-scented spring air.
"And you, Mateo? How are you adjusting to running a legitimate security firm?"
May you like
Mateo chuckled softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "It’s different, boss. Less gunfire, more paperwork. But I sleep better at night. My wife says I don't grind my teeth anymore."
"Good," Lorenzo said, turning to look at his old friend. "We’ve spent enough of our lives walking through fires, Mateo. It’s time to enjoy the home we saved."
