Chapter 8 - The Fall of Cole Whitmore

I turned slightly toward the lead DA investigator standing beside me.

"Detective Vance," I said smoothly. "This is Cole Whitmore. The documentation regarding the illegal conversion of trust assets and wire fraud was delivered to your office at noon today."

Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from inside his jacket.

"Cole Whitmore," the detective announced loudly, his voice echoing under the high ceiling of the ballroom. "You are under arrest for grand larceny in the first degree, corporate fraud, and falsification of business records."

Gasps erupted throughout the ballroom. Cell phone cameras flashed everywhere as Manhattan's high society captured the moment.

"This is insane!" Cole screamed, backing away as the officers grabbed his arms. "Lauren, tell them to stop! You can't do this to me! I made you! You were nothing before I found you!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't yell. I simply looked at him with profound, absolute pity.

"You didn't make me, Cole," I said, my voice dropping to a sharp, clear whisper that cut right through his panicked screams. "You just borrowed my name until I decided to take it back."

As the officers pinned Cole’s arms behind his back and clicked the handcuffs into place, Sierra tried to slip away quietly through the side exit. But two private investigators hired by Arthur blocked her path.

"Ms. Miller?" one investigator said, holding up a file. "We have a subpoena for your asset deposition regarding the real estate and jewelry purchased with stolen trust funds. You’ll need to come with us."

Sierra’s face turned white as she looked at Cole, who was now being dragged through the center aisle of the ballroom in handcuffs, screaming curses, his polished image utterly destroyed in front of every major client, investor, and reporter in New York City.

As he reached the double doors, Cole turned his head back one last time, looking at me with red, tear-filled eyes.

"Lauren, please!" he begged, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Think of the twins! Think of our family!"

I met his gaze, raised my champagne glass slightly in a silent, icy toast, and turned my back on him.
